You pick which ones are full screen, and you can change from FSA to not very easily. For example, I use FSA with Terminal and Mail (this is all on the laptop) because I rarely enough need another screen open that it works very well for me. When in Terminal, it is a lot like being at an ancient dumb terminal, and that's great. I spend a lot of time in the terminal. When I reply to a post, however, I switch to BBEdit, which is not full screen. I also run iTunes full screen. -- The trouble with witches is that they'll never run away from things they really hate. It's also the public transportation system here in Houston Texas. And it sucks in money in sales tax and builds rail lines in the middle of streets causing horrendous traffic jams and retailers along it's line to go out of business. To top that off, the cars are generally 75+% unoccupied. Another wonderful product of guvmint.

We've got the bluetooth, narrow keyboard at one of the offices. On the other two machines, I've got the wired full keyboards. And I *really* like the full keyboards a lot. Wireless bluetooth is pretty unimportant in a desktop keyboard, I think, and having the full set of keys and numeric keypad are totally worth it. If I could go back a year, I'd have swapped the bluetooth one for the full keyboard when we bought that particular machine. Remembering multiple key combinations to do easy things like scrolling to the top or bottom of a window is not something I am likely to do. On the bright side, that same machine has the magic trackpad and scrolling long distances with that is very easy.

What I really hate about wireless keyboards/mice is battery failure. Most of the time, I'm sitting at a stationary table, and the peripherals aren't moving. Wires are just fine instead of batteries, for me. > Remembering multiple key combinations to do easy things like scrolling > to the top or bottom of a window is not something I am likely to do. > On the bright side, that same machine has the magic trackpad and > scrolling long distances with that is very easy. But it could be easier. I bought the Magic Trackpad to go with my 2009 MBP. It's bigger, and doesn't require me to have the MBP right in front of me all the time. I usually use a wired keyboard, Kensington Expert Mouse (big trackball) and a 24" LCD, with the MBP on the left side. -- May joy be yours all the days of your life! - Phina We are but a moment's sunlight, fading in the grass. - The Youngbloods Those who eat natural foods die of natural causes. - Kperspective

The MacBook Pro keyboard does not have home and end labelled. It _used_ to have them labelled (on the arrow keys, used in conjunction with the "fn"key), but from about the late 2007 or early 2008 series, the labelling was removed. This matches the timing of the introduction of the aluminium keyboards (August 2007) - all subsequently introduced notebook models had the keyboard labelling simplified, and function key special functions rearranged to match the aluminium keyboards (e.g. they lost the mirroring key on F7). -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I agree - full-screen is goofy and I have no use for mission control, the launcher, or spaces. So I don't use any of them. Unlike auto-save, they are not forced on you in any way. Just ignore them. Remove them from the dock. Get over it. > >> The much improved gestures in Lion have made a huge impact in how I use >> my computers (though you won't really see this without a trackpad). > > Great. You can still scroll the way you always have - with one exception - no more scroll arrows at the ends of the scroll bars. The rest of the gestures are, like MC an FullScreen, entirely optional. Don't learn them if you don't want. So at the end of the day, all the whining about Lion (and ML) is over auto-save and the loss of the arrows at the ends of the scroll bars. In exchange for those horrible things, we've gotten rid of all the PowerPC cruft, improved lots of little things, paved the way for much better security (much of which comes in ML, not Lion), and the OS continues to grow and evolve. Sounds, overall, like a big win to me. The biggest annoyance to me is that I still have a machine which simply cannot run anything later than SL and I still use it, but Apple didn't extend it to work with iCloud, so my contacts on it are no longer synced with my newer machines. That, of course, is not the fault of Lion or ML. But it's annoying.

Never heard of that. Xan you define "in a while" ? Hours ? weeks ? months ? years ? Is that user definable in some preference ? And how is the file locked ? at the file permissions level, or just text edit that decides you can't open the file ? > Perhaps Auto-save should auto-lock by default. In fact, many applications have an "autosave" preference, and the smart ones, autosave in a temporary file to enable to restart at the same spot without changing the original file. >> MC is not functionality I use. Sometimes with complex pages on a web browser, it is hard to get precise scrolling, but the arrows act like a precise stepper motor. The thing is that while they are not used often, when they are needed they are extremely useful. They do not detract from the UI, do not prevent any finctionality, so their remival was simply Steve Jobs making some emotional decision that they should go and ordered his troups to remove them. After all, you wouldn't want something on a computer that doesn't exist on the iphone, now would you ?

First I heard of that ! How is that accomplished ? Does this mean the file permissions are changed to read only ? Or does the app just consider the file to be locked if the last modified date is more than 2 weeks ? (aka: text wrangler would be able to open a file that text edit would refuse to open). If I use text edit to open an "auto locked" file, does that mean that text edit is in read-only mode and won't change the file at all, or will it complain about file locked and force me to unlock/duplicate it before it shows the contents ?

It opens it in read-only mode. If you then try to edit the auto-locked document, you get an Unlock/Cancel/Duplicate dialog. -- Tea Party Patriots is to Patriotism as People's Democratic Republic is to Democracy.

When it's locked, if you open the file and try to edit it, the OS warns you that the file is locked and offers you the chance to either unlock it or duplicate it. If you really do want to modify the file itself, you are forced to explicitly decide so. > > lion auto-locks a file after 2 weeks, and for some truly bizarre > reason, the preference to change that is in the time machine system > preference, of all places. That kind-of makes sense, inasmuch as versions is built on time machine technology. But only kind-of. There really should just be a system prefs panel controling auto-save, versions, locking all in one place, and with an option for the folks who don't want it to just turn it off. While I'm growing to like auto-save, I can't see any good reason for folks who don't want it to be forced to use it. Apple left us lots of options to turn off annoying defaults in a variety of places (ie. hidden scrollbars) and there just doesn't seem much of a good reason to not offer similar options and control over this. IIRC, software developers may opt to include auto-save or not, or offer it as an option to their users. Apple just hasn't offered that choice to folks using Apple's own apps. > > <http://osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/turn-off-file-locking.jp > g> > > having files mysteriously lock themselves confused people, so it was > removed in mountain lion. Frankly, I think document locking is brilliant. It solves the problem of making sure nobody ever inadvertantly edited a file while keeping auto-save and versions intact. If anything, I'd be inclined to put in auto document locking with a 1 day lag. Explicitly unlocking when you start to edit a file is as simple as a quick mouse click on the "ok" button, and that's a small price to pay for insurance that a document will (almost) never be modified by accident. Anyway, there it is.

Why is it the first I heard of auto-locking ? When Lion camme , and ever since it came out, there have been discussions about the "auto-save" and how it is undesirable to many. Yet, the defenders of auto-save never pointed to this auto-lock which is designed to revent accidental changes to documents, the biggest danger of auto-save. I still think that auto-save should be an option that can be enabled or disabled.
