I haven't heard the iMac speakers, but this graph impresses me.

It really is impressive if it represents the true audio as opposed to
electrical spectrum. The amplifier itself should have a much flatter
response before the speaker get to distort the spectrum.

Nevertheless, a typical room resonance will add much finer variation
with frequency. The room resonances can fluctuate by more than 10dB
across the spectrum.

As an aside, I had a problem with one guy who was upset when I
designated sound levels by bels instead of decibels.

no. 40 years ago was 1974. there were no cds in 1974.

the fad was in the early 1990s, about 20 years ago.

the imac can reproduce much higher than 5khz, but in another post in
another thread, you said you could hear a difference in audiophile
grade hardware. now you admit you cannot.

I never said that I could hear the difference. I'd ask you yet again
to stop lying, but I know that would be a fruitless request because
you've demonstrated repeatedly that you're incapable of refraining from
lies.

One is tempted to adapt the old joke "How do you tell a politician is
lying? His lips are moving" to this situation.

But that would be rude.

by saying you can't hear a difference, you're confirming what i said.

unlike you, nothing i said is a lie.

I've gone back upthread and reread all of Michelle's posts. She
never made any claim about something being easy to do except in a
comment about green markers and CDs, where she was obviously
repeating the claims of what she called hucksters.

If you can't provide a reference quote, which you can't, then you
owe her an apology. (Michelle: good luck with that.)

if you read the post to which you responded, you'd see that i said, 'in
another thread'.

that means that reading upthread isn't going to net what you thought
you might find.

but since you asked, here you go:

since she now says she can't hear past 5khz, then she won't be able to
tell the difference, even with her straw man piece of shit amp.

once again, in double-blind tests, people consistently can't tell the
difference between normal gear (not junk) and audiophile grade.

they *think* they can, but when the rubber meets the road, they do no
better than chance. in other words, they're guessing.

even supposed 'trained audiophiles' can't tell the difference between
monster cable and coat hangers, and some even preferred the latter.

audiophile equipment is one of the biggest scams around.

Here is the exchange between you and Michelle in the post to which I
responded:

Michelle:

nospam:
then why were you arguing it was easy to do?

by saying you can't hear a difference, you're confirming what i
said.

Back to our program in progress:

I was expecting to find what you accused Michelle of doing: saying
that it was easy to hear the difference. Nowhere does she make that
claim.

I don't see any claim here that Michelle can hear anything, much
less that it was easy to hear a difference.

Again, there is no claim here from Michelle that she personally can
hear anything nor that she personally finds it easy to hear a
difference.

Which makes this assertion a non sequitur.

I have a Boom.app installed. It's Boom v 1.8.1. The "about" window says
that it's from Global Delight Tech. If it's an earlier version of what
you have, this may help.

My iMac is running 10.6.8.

Running the Boom.app installed a Boom icon in the menu bar. It's a blue
dot with two ascending circles representing (I guess) amplified sound
waves. Clicking the icon brings down a slider to control the amount of
amplification. At the bottom of the slider, there's an icon of a box
with an arrow pointing into it. Clicking on this icon brings up a window
that with another volume slider and the equalizer control.

As you have discovered, there's not much to see. However, it worked well
when I needed it to boost audio for some online work I was doing.

Thank you for your reply. I never even saw am "about" window. All I
found out is that the installation put Boom into the account preference
for startup applications. I am going to look at my installation in light
of your revelation.

To install. did you do more than drag the Boom icon onto the application
icon?

It has been a couple of years since I did the install, so I'm not sure.
But I would have remembered if it had been complex, so my guess is that
it was a simple drag and drop installation.

There's a download-the-help-file page here -

http://www.globaldelight.com/boom/help/

It's also inside the program. I got Boom as part of a package of stuff
in a charity sale, but I haven't tried it yet. There's just no way more
'boom' is going to come out of the tiny speakers in my 13" MacBook Pro.
Heh.

I looked at the Smith Micro site, but didn't see Boom2 there...?

I've bought stuff from Smith Micro in the past - a couple of their own
products (Poser Pro, Anime Studio) and StuffIt Deluxe - and their sales
and customer service is OK. (I was able to get the Mac versions of the
software I'd previously bought for Windows, after moving to Mac in 2012
and contacting them with my serial numbers.)

However, I get periodically emailed with offers for other software from
time to time, the majority of which I've never heard of and have doubts
as to their value. It's a bit of a mixed bag as far as their online
store is concerned.

I just checked, and I can't find any trace of the app you mention. That
sounds warning bells in my head, as that potentially means you're stuck
if you want support.

Quite a few system-level apps work like that, in my experience -
usually, they are activated by a menu icon or key combination. Of
course, it helps with the app actually tells you this!

As a rule now, I *always* verify that the DMG or ZIP file is OK before
closing the download page. Been bitten enough times not to take any chances.

They are not the worst offenders, by any stretch. I still have
nightmares from trying to activate a copy of Cinema 4D bought direct
from Maxon several years back. And E-on Software require a similarly
convoluted activation process for their Vue software packages.

I am sorry to see the thread morph into something entirely different
from what was intended. Such meandering of thought is the bane and
beauty of USENET.

it's the first step when you mount a dmg is a verify, and an invalid
zip will fail to unzip. you'll get an error message.

I believe it went through that process OK.

What I am trying to figure out is how to remove all traces of Boom2 and
maybe start over again.

In an earlier response billy@MIX.com gave me a link to an insturction
book. I still need to look at that in some detail.

BTW, just because I disagree with you on skin effect does not mean I do
not appreciate you responses.
