Here is a screenshot showing Mac OSX 10.10.1, OSX 10.6.8, Mac OS 9.0.4
and Windows 7 all running together, and all without a hitch:

10.6.8 and Windows are running in VMWare Fusion, 9.0.4 is in
Sheepshaver and Yosemite is native.

A measley four?!?! ;-)

You should be able to get way more than that, especially if you include
emulators for things like the 680x0 Mac, Apple II, Amiga, Atari ST,
Gameboy, Gameboy Color, etc. ... assuming you can fit them all
on-screen to get a screenshot.

OR you can go the other way to multi-OSes by running recursive OSes,
e.g. having a modern Mac running an old Mac OS emulation, which is
running an Amiga emulator, which is emulating a Mac.

OK, this is fun.

I've got System 6.0.8 in vMac, Mac OS 8.1 in Basilisk, Mac OS 9.04 on
SheepShaver, Lubuntu Utopic in VirtualBox, all running under Yosemite.

Sheepshaver. I have startup disks for Systems 7, 8 and 9. A blast from

That's neat, and it's free. I notice the newer VM softwares, like VMware

Virtualisation uses the computers own chip, so software like VMWare,
Virtual Box, and Parallels can only run Intel-based OSes and software.

Emulation translates the code from one chip to another, so software
like Sheepshaver, vMac Mini, Boycott / Boycott Advance, Power64, etc.
can run OSes and software from non-Intel systems.

Emulation is usually slower than virtualisation (obviously emulating an
old system like C64 on a brand new iMac is more than fast enough), but
virtulisation is also slower than running it natively (i.e. using Boot
Camp).

System 7, 8 and 9 in Sheepshaver are _much_ faster than they ever were
in the old 68040's.

For things like games that extra speed can be a nuisance and make them
completely unplayable. Sometimes you can use a "slow down" application
like G4 Throttle that sits in the background and basically just hogs
processor time.

The Power64 (Commodore 64 emulator), Power20 (VIC20 emulator), and
Catakig (Apple II emulator) all run at approximately the normal speed
of those old computers, but also have a "Boost" option that makes use
of the faster Mac chips to speed them up (which is handy for some of
the long-winded loading times of some games even from disk images).

What about the PPC versions of 7.x, 8.x and 9.x? - I also thought this
until I got really familiar with the use of ResEdit. After this I
modified some of the OS 8.x and 9.x version - especially 8.6, 9.0.4, 9.1
and 9.2.x by allocating more internal memory to each and every possible
part of the systems.

This indeed increased both speed and performance. My 'monster' is a
completely modified OS 9.2.2 running bootable on a MDD 1,25ghz, but it
also swollows apprx. 140mb of memory to the system.:-) - Some app
versions are just as fast as the same versions on my MacPro1.1 - such as
AppleWorks 6.2.x, Freehand MX 11.x, Photoshop CS1, Canvas 8 and more...

And until today the 'Monster 9.2.2' has never had an unprovoked freeze
or breakdown...

Cheers, Erik Richard

Mac OS 8 / 9 is often as quick, if not quicker, at running the same
applications (including the Finder) than the early versions of Mac OS
X. That's because Mac OS X has a lot of silly overhead for processor
time like drop shadows, transparency, etc.

Virtualization is not enough slower than native to notice - at least on
the more recent multicore platforms. The CPU's are not loaded often to
the hilt so there are gobs of available CPU cycles to run the hypervisor
and the guest OS.

I've run OS X + WinXP + Ubuntu + OpenSUSE all at once. Not that I have
a need for all 4 ... just ... because. I have no current use for Linux
at all, actually. Windows is just good to have for a couple old, useful
apps.

How about multiple boots of various OSes on the drive? ;) Yeah, you can
only use a single OS at a time. :P

Should that be something to write home about.:-)? - On my old
QuickSilver CPU upgraded to 2x1,8ghz I ran OS X 10.3.x, 10.4.x, 10.5.x +
9.2.2 - all fully bootable...

On my oldest MacPro1.1 Xeon 4x2,66ghz, I have had OS X 10.4.11, 10.5,8,
10.6.8, 10.7.5 and Windows XPPro SP3. - All were fully bootalbe until
the Windows disk burned off, so now that one is only running in a WM
through ParallelsDesktop... - And I have reduced the systems now to only
10.5.8, 10.6,8 + Win XPPro. And my newer MacPro1.1 Xeon 4x3,0ghz will be
running only 10.6.8, 10.7.5 + Win7 Ultimate. The 10.4.x and 10.5.x will
then only be on a MDD along with a bootable OS 9.2.2...

A friend of mine who is a professional Mac supporter (lots of phone
support) is - for the moment - running OS X 10.6.x, 10,7.x, 10,8,x and
10.9.x + Windows 7 Pro + latest version of OS X Server on his MacPro5.1
HyperThread. I don't recall whether it's 10.8.x or 10.9.x he's using as
main system, but the rest of the sytems are running through
ParallesDesktop. - Just a click and he's in a new system.:-)

Cheers, and a happyNew Year
Erik Richard
