More is not necessarily better. Sort of like the photography adage;
"The best camera (gun) is the one you have with you."
In a six shot DA revolver I usually load 5 rounds and have two loaded 6
round speed loaders handy. For my .45 I have 7 & 8 round magazines.
When I carry, I carry "cocked & locked",. that is with a round in the
chamber and safety on. The 1911 .45 ACP is not a double action
semi-automatic, and "cocked & locked" carry is only recommended for
shooters who have trained with their weapon in this mode.
My Glock M23 has a 13 round mag and is also carried with a round in the
chamber, but it functions much the same way as a double action revolver
and has no safety as such. The trigger pull on the Glock, even after
tuning, is truly awful. It doesn't get out much these days.

I am not a particular fan of the 9mm. For that type of compact pistol I
would almost prefer a .380 over a 9mm.

Yes, both Glaser Safety Slugs & Magsafe.

What modification. Just get a Reminton 870, a Mossberg 500, or 590, or
a Winchester SXP

That depends on the .45.
A full sized Colt 1911 is a hefty chunk of steel and is quite heavy. I
have a Kimber CDP II custom carry, which has an alloy frame and slide,
and is more compact than the full size 1911. The are smaller more
compact & lighter .45's from Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Glock,
Sig-Sauer, & S&W.
Some of Kimber's offerings.
...and here is a nice compact S&W 45.

If you want a really small .45 there is the Glock M36.

Couldn't handle the weight or the recoil?

When I was in the army, I wound up at one point where the entire unit
was armed with .45 cal M1911A1 pistols. We received instruction for an
hour on how to use it (including field stripping, cleaning, and
reassembling), with some dry fire. We were then given 10 rounds for
practice, and 40 rounds for qualification. I was the only person on my
team to fire Expert; everyone else was either Marksman or Sharpshooter.
No one boloed.

We're Canadian. Metric named rounds have to be better.
The 9mm imparts about 40% more energy to the bullet.
More energy on target is what it's all about - so with the frangible
rounds (not tested in the article) you'll leave more damage, at least
with the safety rounds, in the 9mm than the .380.
The non safety rounds of course have a higher risk of going straight
through with the 9mm.

Too long for home defense at 02:30. A lupara is what you want (only two
barrels though - but that should be enough).

The weight. She doesn't _like_ recoil. But she'll shoot anything. A
rifle, prone, is 'weightless' for the shooter...
I see what you say about more compact/lighter .45's. I haven't handled one.

Than what, a .380?
Imparting that energy, as you said is the important thing. 9mm are
notorious for using that energy to produce through and through wounds
without imparting any of that energy to the subject. A .357 Mag has a
similar problem, however that round introduces such a high degree of
hydrostatic shock the energy transfer is irrelevant. The over
penetration problem still exists for both 9mm and 375 Mag.
> More energy on target is what it's all about - so with the frangible

The .380 is just an option which can make for easier good shot
placement, handling, & concealment for those not comfortable dealing
with hot rounds out of a 9mm, or bigger.
As I have said my preference lies with the .45 ACP and the .40 S&W.
> The non safety rounds of course have a higher risk of going straight
> through with the 9mm.
That is the point of their existence.
They also do a very good job of transferring the maximum bullet energy
to the subject. The analogy can be made to placing one's hand on a flat
surface and then stabbing through it with an icepick. The energy of the
thrust is focused on the point and is expended in traveling through.
Damage and energy transferred to the hand is minimal. Now pound the
hand with a 15 pound hammer. Energy transfer is applied directly to the
hand and damage will be severe.
The frangible rounds do much the same thing in transferring all their
energy to the target and do not waste it with penetration.

They reduce the risk of over penetration.

Nope! Perfect for home defense at anytime.

Very effective, but not particularly good for follow up, particularly
without practice.

Since you introduced the notion of safety rounds a few posts ago, I
assume we can remain in that mode. Of the several nice things, at short
range, all that energy (and material) stays in the target...

My father got slapped in the face when a civilian woman boarded "his"
Lancaster wearing stilleto's. He said, "You can't wear those in here
Ma'am, you're imparting over 1000 lbs. per square inch^ on the floor -
you'll go right through.

One of the rounds used is actually a "ball" (a round ball). If you're
accurate enough that fellow is not getting up. Period. Really
something for a center-of-mass hit.

That's what I had been doing at the range; I was shooting once a month;
every third month was with .357, and the other two months was with .38.

Read the rest of the thread to see why I opted for a revolver rather
than a semi-automatic pistol.

I have one of those long coats with big inside pockets as favoured by
shooters in various westerns. That should allow me to have a few:

Are you mad? A coat that's a cross between a Tardis and an invisibility
cloak? People'd kill for one of those.
