Probably narrow thinking on my part; when I see "Cloud" I think "Gussied up word for 'server,'" so I thought you meant in the Cloud, on servers not controlled by the corporation that is running the software. I have no idea how large firms with their own accounting departments run their accounting software. I had to limit myself to what I know, which is the way some medium and small businesses handle accounting--by hiring the outside accounting firms to which I referred. I don't see where it is unfortunate if the apps in question rely on Active-X. As I said, I don't believe that corporate accounting departments or independent accounting firms will be abandoning Windows anytime in the foreseeable future, so what does it matter to us what Windows technology they use? Whatever it is, it's working for them. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

Because Active-X in general is considered risky, and you will have
well-meaning persons/programs advising those that don't know to check or
uncheck this or that option. Or worse yet doing it for you when you're
not looking.

I have not had a problem with Active X since I first began using modern Windows OS's in 1998*. I also quoted my accountant friend who has been running various iterations of her software under XP for 11 years without a glitch. So I have trouble believing that it is as bad in the real world as Microsoft bashers like to claim. Can you imagine how much of modern society wouldn't work if Microsoft Windows really didn't work? Mail, airlines, trucking, power plants, supermarkets, payroll, hospitals, 911, myriad things. Don't thank me or blame me. I'm just telling you the way it really is. *Apple had a deal going. I bought a PowerBook G3 in 1998 and I got Virtual PC and Windows 98 free--from Apple, I emphasize. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

One recent web outage caused some pain for payroll users in the UK: <http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2012/07/18/sage_outage/> That report is skimpy on details but it looks like a check for the latest upgrades at app launch froze when it couldn't find the website. -- Paul Sture

Yes indeed which is why a thin client might be all one really needs for
those Apps. Sure doesn't help the Apple cause.
I wonder of Apple have looked at thin clients - say an Apple TV type of
device but with a more web centered base.

When it comes to accounting (the cases I mentioned), that is possibly
(though not likely) true. First off people want continuity from one
year to the next and the continued ability to look back several years.
So unless the Mac accounting s/w does that (do any? I'll let you figure
that out) it's not an option. If it needs some clumsy conversion that
loses data along the way that's no sale either.
To believe that there is often a Mac app that does things better than
the best PC apps is foolish at best. There are simply a lot more PC
apps out there for every domain of pursuit than for Macs.
