They just reach over from the street - it isn't called "the long arm of the law" for nothing. ;-)

You generally only see side-by-side parking in small towns, and that's often not metered. I suppose if it were, the meter maid would walk the sidewalk to ticket cars. -- Latet anguis in herba.

Here in New Zealand parking wardens can give tickets for expired parking metres / parking receipts, parking too long in areas signposted as specific time limits (wihtout metres), and illegal or obstructive parking. For the time limit signposted ones they go around and put a chalk mark on the tyre (although these days I think they also note it down on a small tablet-like device), and if it's still there next time around the circuit, they give you a ticket. In some places there's also a local by-law that means they can give you a ticket if you kindly give your excess parking time to another person (e.g. you pay for two hours and put the parking receipt in the car's window, but are only there for half-an-quarter so give the parking receipt to the next person). Of course that's because the greedy council wasn't making as much money as they wanted / expected, so with the new law they're basically just stealing people's money since you can't get a refund for the excess unused time. :-(

I don't know why this is called "parallel" parking, since the car are obviously in serial configuration. Maybe it means "parallel to the street/curb"? -- Talk is cheap because supply exceeds demand.

Most car parks here are pay-and-display, and Rita comes round from time to time to check that your ticket hasn't expired. Others (such as at airports or railway stations, you get a ticket on entry and have to feed it into a machine when you want to leave, pay, then use the validated ticket to exit from the car park. -- Tim "That excessive bail ought not to be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted" -- Bill of Rights 1689

That's exactly the reason it's called "parallel parking". Maybe it means "parallel to the street/curb"? For streets which are wide enough, parking is sometimes with cars perpendicular to sidewalk (or at an angle to make it easy for them to enter/exit). You can then park more cars in the same length of street. And you then have a parking meter facing the front of cars instead of their sides.

Technically you do get more cars in the "same length of street", but they take up about twice as much width, so the amount of parking space used up is actually about the same (if you had two rows of parallel parked cars). Angle / perpendicular parking is usually done on busier / narrower streets because it is faster to park in them than using parallel parking (which causes hold-ups as the driver tries to back in). You do get a similar hold-up when the angled parker tries to back out, but most people are so hopeless at parallel parking that it takes them far longer and multiple attempts.

I don't know why this is > called "parallel" parking, since the car are obviously in serial > configuration. Maybe it means "parallel to the street/curb"? Yes, it is parrallel to the curb. It usually depends on the width of the street and how busy it is as to whether they chose to use "parallel to the curb" or "perpendicular / angular to the curb" parking. Either method can use "metered" parking - these days actual inidividual parking metres for each car are fast disappearing and being replaced by a pay station that issues a time-stamped receipt to put in your car window. Having to pay for parking (or even time-limited free parking) is rather ridiculous and simply puts many people off bothering to go there, and then the idiots in local Council stupidly wonder why they don't have as many visitors to the area. :-\ There's one suburban shopping area near me that has paid parking areas, and it's virtually a ghost town for shoppers compared to the other surrounding suburbs that have free parking.

Well it depends, dunnit. Instead of clogging up the car park, they just clog up the free parking in the local side streets instead. One of the places I do work for has a lot of people parking in the free areas and then walking or taking a short bus ride to get to the city centre and university area where they would have to pay over-priced amounts for parking.

Over the last 10 years or more the traditional 1 meter per 2 places for end to end parking has been superseded by an electronic jobby serving a group of parking bays where you tap your parking bay number in before you pay. This means that parking wardens can check the lot to see what is overdue without walking up the whole row. There are also blue parking zones which are free for up to 2 hours or more, depending on the area, and you leave a cardboard clock on your dashboard showing the time it is due to expire. Cheating on that is apparently expensive if you get caught. Underground or multi-storey car parks have a ticket and barrier system. -- Paul Sture

Most on-street parking (which is where > parking meters usually are) is parallel to the curb. It depends here in NZ simply on the width of the street. Angle parking is preferred as more car parks can be fit in the street, and the act of parking is almost made much easier. You'll only find parallel parks where space doesn't allow. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

These days you could use technology to ticket the vehicle via post /
email rathe than leaving a paper ticket on the windscreen that (as
allegedly claimed by the "offender") gets destroyed by rain / sun or
blown away in the wind so that they "didn't see it".
