Time Machine is the Mac OS X's in-built automatic backup software.

Time Capsule (various models) is an Apple network hard drive combined
with a router that can be used for Time Machine backups. It does have
ports for Ethernet, USB, etc. as well as Wi-Fi ... unfortunately it
does not have a broadband modem in it.

There are various pieces of software that would allow remote control
the Mac if she installed it and authorised you to have access ... of
course, since you say that you don't really know what you're doing on
the Mac, it may not actually be a good idea to let you just play around
on it. I guess it depends on what's actually wrong with the Mac.

I'm not sure which is considered the best of the various options these
days though.
