#28167 — Firefox equvalent of ClickToFlash

From"John Varela" <newlamps@verizon.net>

SubjectFirefox equvalent of ClickToFlash
Message-ID<51W5y0sPNk52-pn2-Gr7E1wRUP2Kc@localhost>
ClickToFlash is for Safari. I'd like a similar capability in
Firefox.

Firefox lists a bunch of Flash blockers at about:addons. Most of
them have good user ratings, but scanty descriptions of what they
do. Clearly they're not all the same, and it's not clear which if
any function like ClickToFlash.

Is anyone here familiar with them and can make a recommendation?

Not installing Flash has done very well for me for about 8 years or so.

I still find an occasional web site that insists on Flash.
Smithsonian.com is particularly bad. Youtube is getting better,
however.

youtube does not need flash and hasn't for a fairly long time.

For most videos, not all.

all of them now, since youtube officially supports html5, but before
that, it was close enough to all to be considered all.

the iphone came out in 2007, didn't have flash, and worked just fine
with youtube.

It seems no one explained that to Firefox.

Almost all of them are lying. Tell them you're on an iPad and it
magically works. For the tiny tiny minority that really mean it, if I
*really* care, I will use Chrome. This nearly never happens.

Really? I've watched a couple of videos there within the last week,
though it is not a site I go to often.

I haven't needed Flash on Youtube since the iPhone came out in 2007.

Me too.

Although recently I've stopped bothering with it because AdBlock+ and
Ghostery seem to block all the advertising Flash anyway.

No worries. Flash is such an unholy kludge, that a Flash blocker has
been the first extension I install in every web browser for the past
decade.

I've also recently come to enjoy tab suspension extensions that
auto-suspend (like Firefox does with inactive saved tabs when starting
up) tabs after being in the background a set period of time, and allow
exceptions (e.g. so an iHeartRadio playlist in the background doesn't
stop).

Between the those two types of extensions, my habit of having dozens of
saved tabs across a few windows no longer cripples my system's
performance :-)

I've had a Flash blocker for some time as part of PrefBar. Lately
I've come to realize that the Flash blocker was the only thing I was
using on that bar, so I want to get rid of it.

I'm in Chrome right now where I use The Great Suspender.

I forget the name of the Firefox addon I used to use (it was no longer
maintained past 2013. BarTab? Or was that a WoW addon...?). Recently
when I've been in Firefox I've just got into the habit of quitting and
relaunching FF once in a while to get it to use it's own inactive tab
suspension upon launch. I tried a couple newer tab FF suspension addons,
but they seemed quite flakey. Anyone care to suggest one that works in
FF v.36? I am thinking of moving back to FF from Chrome, as Chrome kinda
sucks nowadays.

For those of us who also use Chrome - Flashcontrol has served me well in that
arena.

Just search for it in the Chrome web store.
