yes it absolutely is. otherwise they wouldn't be giving it away.

google dabbles in a few other areas such as autonomous vehicles but
that's research, not a product.

Google has always been about MUCH more than just advertising.

they offer updates for *existing* customers.

good luck getting ios to run on a non-iphone.

good luck getting license to distribute it for your own hardware.

that's totally different than google/android.

as a public company, maximizing revenue is *required*, and google does
that with ads.

But google and apple do compete in the mobile OS
arena, no matter how mindlessly you try to deny that.

Just like ebay and amazon and aliexpress compete in that
arena, even tho they have quite different business models.

Completely and utterly irrelevant to whether google and apple do
compete in a great raft of areas, mobile phone OSs, phones, tablets,
cameras, browsers, eStores, even what ever you call Siri, etc etc etc.

nope.

apple doesn't make money on advertising, other than a small amount from
iads.

Business models don't count. The fact is that for every Android phone
sold, Apple loses an iPhone sale. Therefore, they're in competition.
You can rationalize against that forever, but you can't change the
facts, no matter how much you deny them.

That's just not true.

There are plenty of people who would *never* consider an iPhone even if
there were no other choices, and there are plenty of other choices.
Crappy choices, to be sure, but other choices.

No, that's definitely not true. Android is used on many crappy, cheap
phones that don't even make up the market segments in which Apple
competes.

Somewhat. To a large extent, no.

The "fact" you stated above is erroneous.

of course it counts.

google's revenue is almost entirely advertising, while apple's revenue
is almost entirely hardware and software sales.

> The fact is that for every Android phone
> sold, Apple loses an iPhone sale.

definitely not true.

you don't know if the person was even considering an iphone.

some hate apple and won't get an iphone no matter what, even if it was
completely free, both hardware and service.

many android phones are low end that do not compete at all with an
iphone. there are android devices that do not have lte. some android
phones are sold with gingerbread, which is several years old.

perhaps the person was considering a windows phone versus android, or
maybe even blackberry (they're not dead *yet*).

also keep in mind that the bulk of android phone sales are for samsung,
htc, motorola xiaomi, etc. google does sell nexus phones but not very
many and they're sold at or near cost (subsidized) because they'll make
the money back in advertising.

amazon does something similar with the kindle, knowing that most users
will be buying stuff on amazon, so they subsidize its price. amazon
even forks android and cuts google out of the loop.

> Therefore, they're in competition.

nope.

> You can rationalize against that forever, but you can't change the

Wrong, as always. Ebay's business model is quite different to Amazon's and
to other smaller online retailers in spades. Doesn't mean they don't
compete.

ebay and amazon do not compete at all!

one's an auction site and the other is an online vendor.

There is some overlap in how they function. eBay does offer many of its
wares for sale at the announced price without auctioning. And they
compete for the custom of people trying to sell off used goods, eBay
offering auctions and Amazon offering to buy the goods and later sell at
a fixed price.

There is a hell of a lot of overlap with who uses them.

In fact most of the transaction volume moves that way now.

And even when the detail of how they operate differs,
that is irrelevant to whether they compete or not.

eStores obviously compete with bricks and mortar
stores even tho the way they operate is quite different.
