| Message-ID | <290720141921122706%michelle@michelle.org> |
I have another domain that accesses a POP3 server. I can't receive mail from that account, running Yosemite; I can receive mail from that account on my iPad and iPhone (iOS 7.1.2). I've checked and double-checked the password. It's only this one account; I can receive mail from another POP3 server at a different domain. Any relevant suggestions?

Assuming Yosemite's Mail has the same diagnostic features as earlier versions (I haven't looked), go to the Window menu, choose Connection Doctor, click the Show Detail button, then the Check Again button. The output in the panel at the bottom has details of the connection with all servers, but they are interleaved so you need to look for matching socket/thread values to string together communication with a particular server. (You can copy the text out and paste it into something else like TextWrangler for easier browsing.) Passwords are not displayed in the text, but other information like account names and server names are visible, so you may prefer not to post it publically in raw form. That might provide clues as to why this particular POP3 account is not working. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

There's just too much there for me to winnow out what is relevant.

Here is a better method, which was new in Mavericks so I hadn't tried it yet. At the bottom of the Connection Doctor window check the "Log Connection Activity" option, then click "Check Again", then uncheck "Log Connection Activity", then click "Show Logs", which opens Mail's Logs folder in Finder. (The "Show Detail" state doesn't matter.) This separates out the communication dialogue with each server into a separate log file, each of which has a name starting with a UUID, then a hyphen, then the server domain name, ending with ".txt". If you leave logging enabled, they will keep accumulating subsequent connections. Look for a file with a name ending with the domain name of the offending mail server, then open that in your favourite text editor. The important details: Lines showing actions taken by Mail start with an action description, then a date and time, host, port, socket and thread fields. Other non-blank lines are either text written to or read from the server. The direction can be identfied by whether they follow a READ or WROTE action line. What you should see is this pattern: INITIATING CONNECTION CONNECTED READ, showing the initial prompt from the server. WROTE, showing the first POP3 command sent to the server. This is probably CAPA, which asks for server capabilities. READ, showing the capability list, ending with a "." line. WROTE, sending the USER command. READ, showing the response to that command. WROTE, sending the PASS command (assuming the simplest protocol variant). READ, showing the response to that command. If the username and password were accepted, this should start with "+OK". WROTE, sending the QUIT command. READ, showing the response to that command. If something is going wrong, it may fail to connect at all (in which case you won't get a CONNECTED), or one of the early messages READ from the server may indicate the problem. Mail should be showing some kind of error message if it fails to connect, but who knows what new bugs have been introduced in Mail for Yosemite. You can delete the log files once you've finished investigating this. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Best advice I can give is turn off the SSL on that account and try it plain on port 110. If it seems to work, go back and turn the SSL back on. Then see what happens. It could be a cert issue with Yosemite that connection doctor is reporting back a password issue, but it's not. -bruce bje@ripco.com

Yeah, but don't leave SSL turned off, as that will reduce the security of your email transmissions. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Before writing to these groups about this problem, I changed the password for the server, and then changed it on all three of my devices (iMac, iPad, and iPhone); I wrote the password on paper and then copied it to each device. So I know that I'm using the correct password. > Have you tried contacting your email service provider for assistance? > Surely they can tell you which settings you should be using. No I haven't because I'm using the same settings on all three devices.

I think the fact that Mail says it is using APOP and the password is incorrect points to settings not being correct. Could it be you have multiple Mail accounts configured for this server, and the log messages are actually from a duplicate account rather than the one you happen to be looking at in Mail Preferences > Accounts? -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I am using multiple accounts, but only this one for this server; the other accounts are with other servers.

It looks like Mail uses APOP whenever the POP server indicates that it supports this. According to RFC 1460, the server indicates this ability by including <process-ID.clock@hostname> in the initial greeting banner. If you look at the two log files Michelle sent, the one from the server she's having a problem with sends this greeting banner: +OK <421.1406704763@pop.secureserver.net> while the one that works OK sends: +OK fed1rmfepo101 InterMail POP3 server ready. The first one indicates that APOP is supported. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

Is there anything that I can do at this end to fix the problem?

If there aren't relevant choices in the Account preferences, probably not. If this just started with Yosemite, I guess you should report it to Apple. This is the whole point of being a beta tester, right? You're expecting problems, so you can report them to Apple and they can fix them before the official release. Maybe there's a hidden preference that you can change with "defaults write" -- that will probably have to come from Apple if it's something new. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***

To me it seems this is working as designed, and the real issue is that the *server* is not accepting authentication properly, no? -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I don't have Yosemite, but in Snow Leopard, Password and APOP are separate choices in the Authentication menu. If the APOP option is gone, then you can submit a feature request that they add it back. If it's still there, but she hasn't chosen it, the bug would be that it uses a different authentication mechanism than the one you configured. It may be working as designed, but the design could be wrong. If 3+3 returns 5, it doesn't become correct just because you document it in the processor manual. -- Barry Margolin, barmar@alum.mit.edu Arlington, MA *** PLEASE post questions in newsgroups, not directly to me ***
