I overstated. I need three batteries because these little Canon
NB-5L batteries can't support a day's shooting especially if there
is video involved. I don't think I've ever actually had to use the
third battery, but it's there in case of need.

How so? And that does me no good if I don't have a card reader to begin
with.

A typical import takes just a minute or so. If it's a choice between
copying my photos directly from the camera or not copying them at all,
I'll gladly use the little bit of battery required.

In my (albeit limited) experience, transferring from the camera is orders
of magnitude slower.

Even so, if you have no card reader, transferring from the camera works
just fine.

True, but the original issue was not that it didn't work, but that it
was excruciatingly slow. So....

It's iPhoto that slows transfer down!

That is not my experience with iPhoto. Importing pictures is very fast.

In this case, the OP is complaining that iPhoto takes time to scan
photos that have already been imported. In that respect, Erilar is
correct.

You are either not importing many or have never tried another method 8-)

I only import from either a card reader of directly from a iOS device.
Both methods are much much *MUCH* faster than connecting my camera and
importing from there. 10 times faster? Yes, probably.

Well, technically, it's both.

Using a card reader is far much faster than connecting /any/ camera
directly to the computer - except those few having Firewire instead of
USB. - Especially Sony, Fuji and the smaller Olympus compact cameras do
have very slow transfer speeds. And it doesn't matter whether you use
iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture or whatever application to store.

Well, not everyone has SD cards. On the other hand, I don't use iPhoto to
import from my camera. I just connect it and move what I want on the
computer directly to an appropriate folder. Among other things, it only
takes a fraction of the time.

Did the camera come with Mac software? Try using it instead of
iPhoto to import. My Canon camera's software remembers which photos
have already been uploaded -- which is trivial, since it only has to
save the serial number of the last one -- and imports only the new
ones.

Importing outside of iPhoto also provides an opportunity to
Photoshop and rename the photos before importing to iPhoto. It's
been my experience that the interface between iPhoto and Photoshop
is error-prone. And I like having the file name and the iPhoto title
be the same.

Not sure. It's an old digital camera though. It probably doesn't work
with the newer Mac OS X versions. :/

My camera is pre- memory card. I've been able to move from camera to
computer via drag and drop into a folder on my desktop since before OSX and
still can. Plug in camera cable. Open the list of fotos. Highlight the ones
I want to move. Drag them into the folder I want them in, possibly a newly-
created one. Do something else for a few minutes if there were many fotos.
Eject camera connector. Edit fotos on computer as time and inclination
dictate.

I don't know what the camera is doing, or what iPhoto is doing, but
here's what you are doing wrong.

You are connecting the camera to your computer via a USB cable. Here's
the right way to upload photos to your computer.

1. Own more than one camera storage card. Three or four ought to be
sufficient if you are an amateur photographer.

2. When you're ready to transfer photos remove the card from your
camera and replace it with a fresh card. If the fresh card has photos
on it, format it. The place to back-up your photos is your two or more
back-up drives, not your memory card.

3. Insert the memory card that you want to read into your computer or
into an external card reader. The Sony MRW-EA7 external reader is
excellent.

4. If you're in a hurry because you're doing sports or a wedding, and
you don't have an assistant to do this for you, use Photo Mechanic
<http://www.camerabits.com/products/> for its transfer speed, then have
the photos automatically transfer to Lightroom 5 (having dumped iPhoto)
via a Lightroom "watched folder."

5. Remove the card from the computer or card reader. Be sure to
reformat it when you next insert it into your camera.

Now you're playing with the big boys.

Thanks for the tips! Yeah, my client is just an average camera user. I
rarely use any cameras and always delete after copying JPEG image files.
No fancy stuff.
