Using a card reader is far much faster than connecting /any/ camera directly to the computer - except those few having Firewire instead of USB. - Especially Sony, Fuji and the smaller Olympus compact cameras do have very slow transfer speeds. And it doesn't matter whether you use iPhoto, Lightroom, Aperture or whatever application to store.
