I am running an iMac with a 3.33GHz Core 2 duo processor, 8 gig memory and a CanonLide 200 scanner. All software is up to date from Apple and Canon. I'm having terrible problems with the scanner not working or working intermittently. Very often in attempting to scan using preview or Image Capture I'm told that there is no scanner connected, even when the scanner is shown in System Preferences. I did manage to get the scanner working via Photoshop Elements for a while, but that has stopped now. Elements tells me there is no scanner present. After a previous appeal for help on this NG I downloaded VueScan only to be told by VueScan there was no scanner connected, even though Prefs showed that there was. I have in the past few months done the following: 1 Updated all software both Canon and Apple. 2 Removed all traces of Canon software from the system and rebooted and updated Canon drivers yet again. 3 Changed the UBS lead twice 4 Appealed for help from Canon and changed all software yet again. 5 Downloaded VueScan. The result of all of the above was either the scanner wouldn't work or works intermittently. I do have Windows 7 installed on a boot partition run by BootCamp. The scanner works perfectly under W7 even to the point of working Canon's proprietary interface which never did work on the Mac. Unfortunately I need the scanner to work under OS as I only have the Mac version of Elements installed and the Mac version of Family History. I am inclined to ditch the Canon and buy an Epson 370 scanner, but I am worried that the same thing might happen with the Epson as has happened with the Canon, i.e intermittent operation. Can anyone throw any further light or advise me on this. Thanks, Peter -- - The e-mail address obviously doesn't exist. If it's essential that you contact me then try peterATpfjamesDOTcoDOTuk

They do go bad even if they are not moved. What if the cable isn't the problem though? He will have wasted that money. A better idea is to figure out what the problem is before trying to fix it. ; ) -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I often ignore posts from Google. Acrobat is notorious for breaking Print Drivers, for HP and other Brands. But if regardless of what you try you don't get anything Printed at all, then the Cable is likely the issue. just sitting connected and not moved around the connections can tarnish or corrode and stop the connection. Unless you can go to the pins, or more than like the connections and clean them, you'll need to replace the cable. On the other hand if you upgrade your system then more than like you need to go to System Preferences > Printers and Scanners. Then remove the Printer from the list. Have the Printer & Scanner control Panel find the printer. Add it back and make default. If that don't work download the latest Print Drive from Manufacturer then delete printer from Printer & Scanner and install new driver then add back in Printer Scanner. Make default printer and if asked set the default page size. (8.5 X 11 US letter, A4, A3. A5 or whatever) set it. Then try printing. -- Phillip M. Jones, C.E.T. The last driver update is Aug 2011 which is what I'm using now with 10.8.5. The Canon Scanner software and VueScan both work with no problem. So I'm guessing that something in Mavericks is screwing them up. I delayed going to 10.4 years ago because the last working driver for my old SCSI scanner only ran on 10.3. If I tried to use it on 10.4, the system crashed. So, I waited about a year, then upgraded but kept 10.3 around for scanning. Pretty soon the scanner broke outright, so I recycled it and got the 8600. It's been fine ever since. -- DeeDee, don't press that button! DeeDee! NO! Dee... The scanner was there but wasn't. I fiddled about a bit, but was sufficiently unimpressed with Mavericks anyway not to waste much time on it. And I've heard about similar problems elsewhere. I'd left myself a retrieval position (a clone of my Snow Leopard set up), so I chickened out and went back to it. Mine is a late 2007 iMac (just about the earliest that can go past SL) and I'm using a Canon 5150 all-in-one. I'd be interested to hear the experiences of others, in particular from anyone who hasn't had these problems or has had and fixed them. Until I can be confident that my scanner will work with Mavericks, I'm staying put. John.

FWIW my ancient Canonoscan N656U (USB) still works fine using VueScan 8.4.77 on Mavericks 10.9.1 on my late 2009 iMac11,1 without ever having to manually update drivers since I first bought it many years ago. The scanner functions work OK via Preview and Prizmo ( an OCR program) which I reckon both use Image Capture's controls. This is via direct USB. I can check ethernet/wifi if that's any help. Maybe. My MFP is from Brother, and it just works. -- I hate people who pronounce it "vunerable." And you can't correct them because they're so vulnerable.

If the cable is connected directly to the computer, which USB port is the scanner plugged into? Next time it tells you no scanner is connected, open /Applications/Utilities/System Information and select USB on the sidebar to view the USB deice connections on your computer. See if the scanner appears in that listing. It would also be good to know what, if any, messages are posted to the system / console logs at the time of this problem. Viewing Crash, Console, and System Logs To view logs on your computer, open /Applications/Utilities/Console. NOTE: You cannot use the Console application to view the system log from a non-administrative account. Instead, do this: a. Open a terminal window. b. Enter the command (where admin is the short name of an administrator account): su admin c. Supply the password to the admin account when prompted. d. Enter the command: cat /var/log/system.log If you enter these commands correctly, the system log will be displayed in the terminal window. The system log will usually give you an indication as to what is causing startup and low-level issues, where the console log typically shows only issues you experience after you are logged into your user account. That indicates a problem with the scanner driver software. What version Mac OS X are you running (sorry if you already mentioned it elsewhere)? Was the scanner listed in the USB section of the System Information window at the time? That's important to know as well. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. I'll just have to wait until it happens again and I'll check then. The Canon driver was only downloaded from the Canon download site about 2 weeks ago. Apple does include Canon drivers with the base Mac OS X install; those may be sufficient for scanning (not sure though). You might try uninstalling the Canon software you installed to see if the problem persists. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Using "Spotllight" I went through the HD and ID'd every bit of Canon software on it. These I deleted, and then went into sys prefs>printers and scanners and deleted the entry for CanonLide 200. I then rebooted and OS X immediately found the scanner loaded its own drivers and low and behold it all works. So the moral of the story is to shun Canon drivers like they carry the black death! I'm not crowing too soon, because I've been in this postion before. And if it reverts to its previous behaviour, then I'll convert the scanner into a boat anchor and buy an Epson 370. Try scanning again to see if it continue to work. If not, try logging out and back in to see if it works only once after a logout / restart. I've read reports of this online: <https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570203?start=0&tstart=0> > So the moral of the story is to shun Canon drivers like they carry the > black death! Just a word of warning: I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I recall seeing similar reports with Epson drivers. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
