Yes you're right. It worked once and then back to normality and
frustration.

I just don't know what to do now. I'm buggered!

Like I said, try uninstalling the Canon software.

I think what we've established is that the bug appears to be in the base
Canon drivers supplied to Apple by Canon. You can scan once after
logging in (or restarting), and after that you will need to log out and
back in to restore functionality.

I forget if you mentioned whether or not you have tried using VueScan. I
would recommend trying that to see if it can scan when the base Canon
drivers cannot.

Other than that, I guess you are stuck logging out occasionally, while
you wait for Canon/Apple to update the drivers.

I did try VueScan but it suffers with the same complaint as the base
Canon drivers

Thank you very much for your patient help and advice. I do hope I

I tried to access the scanner at 12. 01p.m with no success. However
the scanner does appear in /Applications/Utilities/system Information/
USB. And it reports the following:

"CanoScan:

This, combined with the fact that you have tried switching USB cables is
a sign that the malfunction is more likely a software issue as opposed
to a hardware issue (though it doesn't completely rule out hardware).

This error message points to a driver software issue.

I see two different software packages on the Canon web site for this
scanner (click the "Drivers" link on this page to see them):

<http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_lide200#DriversAndSoftware>

One appears to be a TWAIN-compliant scanner driver. The other is the
Canon ICA driver for the scanner. Do you have both of these installed?

I would try uninstalling all of the software you installed from the
Canon web site. Mac OS X comes with built in Canon drivers that may be
sufficient for your needs.

This is an interesting error. This seems to indicate a problem with the
System Management Controller kernel extension. Do you have iStat menus,
SMCFanControl, or a similar piece of software installed? It also could
simply be that the malfunctioning scanner driver software caused this
message to appear due to the previous malfunction one second earlier.

I tracked the SMC error to SMCFanControl on my system.

Seems to be merely annoying rather than indicative
of something worth worrying over. I don't know about any
interaction this might be having with your scanner software.

I have a Canon multifunction ( MG6300 series ) without the Canon
software installed, but I haven't had a need to use the scanner.

I had problems with my CanoScan 8800F. The Canon proprietary driver
won't work with 10.9. However, the TWAIN driver works just fine with
Graphic Converter and Photoshop CS6. Also, there is no way to get the
8800F to be recognized by Image Capture. This is discussed in a thread
on Cannon's forums. Sorry, don't have a link for you. I troubleshot this
a couple of weeks ago.

I am having the same problem with my decade-old EPSON 1260 scanner.
Image Capture often reports "no scanner connected" but if I power cycle
it or unplug/replug the USB cable, Image Capture then sees it. But even
then, the scanner will often disconnect between the preview scan and the
actual scan. I estimate I have about a 20% success rate trying to get a
complete scan.

In my case the problem started in 10.8 and persists in 10.9. I tried
operating the scanner in a fresh 10.6 installation using both the
Software Update-supplied Intel driver and the PowerPC driver that it
originally shipped with and get the same result, so it's not a software
problem.

My guess is that either my scanner is developing a hardware problem or
my iMac has a USB problem. Apple Hardware Test reports no errors so I'm
inclined to believe it's the scanner.

Can you borrow another scanner from a friend and test it out?

Don't "call" VueScan via Elements (TWAIN), rather run VueScan directly,
make your scan (to file) and then open that in Elements. While you
should be able to use VueScan from Elements, this sometimes does not work.

I've not seen that problem with Canon scanners. Brother and Kodak
scanners just wouldn't work properly when called from an application,
usually would scan but not pass the data to the application.

Oh it works with both my scanners (Canon office flatbed and Nikon 9000
film scanner).

But when it breaks (either machine will for some cases) there is the
fallback of using Vuescan directly and saving the scan in a file. For
flatbed work that's usually JPG and slide work, TIFF).

When I do a large batch of film (rarely these days) I can be editing one
image while scanning others - so for that using TWAIN is a negative, not
a positive).

That should work rather than trying to use the now cripple TWAIN option.

I am running this Mac under OSX 10.9.1.
I just bought an Epson XP-610 "Small-In-One" printer to supplement my
R2880 photo printer and to take on flatbed scanning tasks from my now
unsupported Canon LiDE 70 scanner.

I have no trouble at all scanning into TIFF, JPEG, PDF, etc. using the
Epson scan app, "Preview" or "Image Capture" and then editing the
resulting TIFF/JPEG in photoshop. All of the scans and printing is done
via Wi-Fi to my home network.
