If you're into commandline then you could install xsane via macports. A
list of supported devices can be found at
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-supported-devices.html

I use it for documents even though I have a VueScan license.

No need for that, especially as it doesn't support my old Canon LiDE
70, or my new Epson XP-610.
As I said above, I have no issues scanning with my XP-610 using "Epson
scan", Preview, or Image Capture". I currently get the best results
using "image Capture".

That's nice.

Oki, it was posted as general info for those who find that their scanner
is unsupported both by the vendor and apple.

I should have added that I can access my Lide 30 in Image Capture
through the Sane drivers..

Yep, I use Image Capture also. It even supports the sheet feeder on my
MFP, so when I got a 30 page contract in the mail and had to send it
back, I dropped it on the scanner, opened up Iamge Capture, and told it
to scan the pages to a single file. A couple of minutes later I had a 30
page PDF.

Good 4 U!

The problem the OP had was with unsupported hardware IIRC... Sane can
help you with that. The Sane drivers can give you access to the your
Sane supported scanner either through iCapture or third party solutions
like XSane. There is prefab packages to be found if you don't like to
"take command"!

I think the OP's problem was installing Cannon drivers.

While VueScan sees my Canon printer/scanner, Image Capture does not.

Systems settings sees it as a printer and scanner. I can check media
and so on.

Issue may be that Canon don't have a Mavericks driver for the printer
but I can print to it with no issue and scan ... just not with Image
Capture.

How long is your USB cable? I had this problem when I 'upgraded' to an
earlier system (OS 10.7, I think) and the new system couldn't cope with
a USB cable of the length I was using. A shorter cable works fine.

Mountain Lion (10.8) killed my Canon LIDE scanner, and it would work
with nothing nowhere nohow. I was told Canon would no longer be
supporting it. Support at Canon said it would still work under Windows
and the PC's had now become very inexpensive. That was the first time
I'd ever heard "buy another computer" as a work-around.

I threw it in the dumpster and bought a scanner from somebody else. I
loved that old scanner though. Oh well.

When the same thing happened to me, Canon support said to get VueScan. I
did that, and it's still working in Mountain Lion. And it works better
than it ever did with the Canon driver.

Me too and it didn't work with VueScan. There were different Canon
lide scanners. I think, but am unsure it was the 80.

VueScan doesn't support the Canon LiDE 70 or LiDE 80. I have an LiDE 70
which only works with the Canon drivers on one of my Tiger MBPs. It
didn't work under OSX 10.6.8.
That is why I bought an Epson XP-610 Wi-Fi all-in-one. That works just
fine with no USB connection, & the Epson driver on this Mac running OSX
10.9.1.

I guess when my current Canon printer/scanner is no longer operable I'll
replace it with an Epson (my photo printer's an Epson) or hp (ugh).

Shame on you for not recycling it.

Actually "the dumpster" in my case is the garage. Sleep well...

Same issue with my Canon - still works but the support level is falling.
Canon show Windows 8.1 drivers - not Mavericks. The "Contact Us"
(including "e-mail us") just leads back to the various support pages.
(US, UK and Canadian Canon printer sites).

I managed today to get my Canon LiDE90 working with OS X 10.9.2 by
downloading the Mountain Line Software

http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_lide90#DriversAndSoftware

The key or critical item i s the MP Navigator EX 1.0 Opener (OS X 10.7/10.8)
as well as the MP Navigator EX

Download and install both. Run the Opener first

Good Luck
