Hi AJL! I have Gateway restore discs, but I was curious about these
restore discs from www.restoredisks.com. As Bill stated it had taken him
7 hours to install. These are not from the manufacture, so they are not
the same. Most of them sell for $26.99 I believe. Although they really
appear to do a very good job to get your computer back to a factory state.

Another thing unusual about these www.restoredisks.com discs is they
appear to also include the Recovery Console. Which most branded OEM
Windows discs do not. Almost always non-branded and retail versions of
Windows are the only ones that include this. Although Dell OEM discs
usually do.

P.S. Did you see the post from Cass_2000 yet? Maybe you can help them.

That doesn't sound right. Way too long. Most of my recovery reinstalls
have taken an hour or less IIRC, but that's the factory disk. Course
it took a couple more hours after that to get rid of the (now way
outdated) crapware... ;)

I wonder how they keep you from installing the OS on other computers.
MS probably wouldn't like it if you could. I haven't checked OEM
recovery disks recently but I think my HP recovery disk was in that
price range, but that was a few years ago.

Interesting. I remember something like that on one of my recovery
disks. I used it to fix the MBR after I did away with a dual boot
Linux/Windows installation.

No I missed it. Was it recently? I kind of drifted away when the flame
wars were going on...

Yeah that is why I got curious and purchase a restore disc from them as
well. I wanted to see why it had taken so long for the other Bill.
Although mine I got only had taken about 35 minutes to install. I also
don't know why this place didn't slipstream the SATA driver into it. But
I can burn another copy that does.

It depends on the manufacture. Like they have said in the past, that
most older Dell OEM discs will install on anything. I have never tried
Gateway restore discs. but I suspect they don't care what machine you
are installing them on either.

Although other manufactures and newer Dell and Gateway discs, check the
motherboard (usually just checking the BIOS) to make sure it is being
installed on the machine it is licensed for.

Yeah about a week ago. I repost it after this one. I think you have the
same notebook as they do. Their webcam doesn't function and I don't know
what that BIOS settings looks like on that machine.

No key code was asked for, nor was there anything anywhere about 30
days to activate. It just came up. Of course they had asked me for
all the information that was onm the labels on the bottom and I sent
it all except for the activation code and they knew that I have a
COA label and a product key.

Ubuntu took less than an hour. And don't forget that XP announced up
front that the install time was ~7 hours. If it were a flakey CD drive
it couldn't have known what the time would be.

I wasn't asked asked anything. They asked for the numbers off the
bottom of the machine and told me that my restore disk version was
configurable and that what they would deliver would be configured for
my machine. That appears to be true since it looked just like it
did when I took it out of the box in 2006.

A USB floppy came from the factory in a separate box for $50.01 and a
rebate card for $50 that I sent in promptly. I like it so well that I
bought a spare later on eBay, and eventually a USB CD drive too.

Not necessarily. Linux driver may handle read/write errors differently
(or even assume success!), or the particular location that's bad on the drive
may not have been accessed by the linux install.

The one I bought from restoredisks.com never asked for anything on the
COA label.

Interesting. There can be lots of reasons for this. One possibility is
your restore disc booted DOS first. And that would take about that long
to install.

Another is many BIOS you can select different disk modes (PIO and DMA).
If you have one of the PIO modes selected, it will install Windows XP
much slower than it could. And Linux could be ignoring what the BIOS
disk mode is set too.

No doubt. Although I got curious and I already have the original restore
discs for this machine. So I wanted to see if these were actually the
same or not. The ones I got are not a clone of the original. But I have
to admit, the end result does look and feel like it did in the factory
state. Although this one doesn't state Gateway anymore in the System
Properties (General tab).

When I needed SATA drivers for a Dell laptop I used nLite and an old
Dell XP CD. It worked like a charm and never asked for COA or anything.

7 hour install means lots of retries on I/O, most likely, bad cd
drive or bad hard drive, or bad media.

	Check event log for errors.

What everyone seems to be missing is that the install predicted a
7 hour install, and that's about what it took.

Don't know about recovery disks, but when transferring files the OS
software calculates the time from the data rate on the hardware being
used. The best example I can think of is my flash drives and SD cards.
They are very different in speed. When I load the same very large file
on each, one media can take very much longer than the other to load.
Yet the OS seems to predict pretty closely the correct time in each
case.

Is it possible that because of some hardware problem, like a poor
reading drive with multiple retrys, that the OS takes the resulting
slower data rate into consideration when predicting the 7 hours?

Just a guess because I really doubt that any OS installation would
ever take 7 hours. Course the recovery disk installs the OS + original
software but still IMO 1 hour max. And for the recovery disks I have
used over the years IIRC a lot less...

What specific model are you running? My DV6000 ?(DV6308) runs Windows
7 beautifully. Everything works on mine, although I did have to get
updated drivers for the card reader.
