It refers to a Linux OS that is loaded directly into memory from a CD.
It runs completely in memory and doesn't use the hard drive. But it
sees the hard drive and can manipulate the files there including
copying them off to an external device.

Actually that isn't true! As I learned this out the hard way. I heard
that Ubuntu doesn't touch the Windows partition and leaves it alone. But
I don't know what good is Open Source if nobody bothers to read it?

I did some investigating after Ubuntu Live toasted my Windows XP install
three times in a roll back in 2008. I had to restore from a backup each
time. And I believed when everybody was saying Ubuntu Live doesn't touch
Windows.

But that isn't true at all. As Ubuntu Live looks around on the drive
looking for a swapfile it can use. On a Windows system, it grabs the
Windows swapfile for its own use. LINUX SHOULDN'T BE TOUCHING ANYTHING
IN A WINDOWS PARTITION PERIOD! Bad, bad, Linux!

In my case, I was running Windows on a SSD. Microsoft and anybody worth
anything will tell you to turn off the Windows swapfile if you have
enough RAM to run Windows without one. This is to reduce excessive
writes to the SSD. Windows XP runs fine in this configuration.

Although Ubuntu Live isn't happy without a Windows swapfile. So it
creates its own in the Windows partition. So in my case, when you boot
up Windows next time... it loads the Windows Installer and hangs. As
Windows thinks it is supposed to load something, but doesn't know what?

So yes, Ubuntu Live does touch Windows and *can* render Windows in an
unusable state. :-(

Thus I always remove the Windows drive first if I want to boot Ubuntu
Live on a system. That way it can't screw up Windows. And if it is
Windows you want to repair, don't use Linux! Use something that is safe
with Windows like BartPE or WinPE instead.

Monica in the alt.sys.pc-clone.dell newsgroup just last week got burned
by Ubuntu too. As it recently toasted her NTFS and now apparently
nothing can read it. :-(

I guess YMMV applies here. I've used several live Ubuntu CDs of
various release dates on various laptops with nary a problem.

If "everybody" says there is no problem but you have a problem what is
the likely conclusion... ;)

Ah, well maybe your little EeePC didn't have enough RAM then? I don't
think I've tried a live disk on anything with less than 512M of
memory.

Heck, even Windows can render Windows to an unusable state. But a
quick Google search didn't turn up your problem. All I got was
hundreds of hits on how to use the Ubuntu live CD to fix Windows
problems... ;)

Same with me, as I used Linux Live for years without problems and then
one day, BOOM! It trashed Windows.

No! Ubuntu Live will work like 99% of the time. It is like playing
Russian Roulette. But why play that game? Use something else that
doesn't gamble with Windows. Like BartPE or WinPE which doesn't even
touch the Windows drive unless you want it too.

Me either. I tried it with 2GB of RAM. I have no idea what happens with
512MB.

Every time somebody suggests using Linux Live to look and try to do
something on a Windows drive, I just cringe! Even when somebody
suggested to Monica to use Ubuntu Live to pull off all of the data
before formatting the hard drive, I did as well. Although playing the
Russian Roulette game, it had toasted her Windows file system too.

It had taken me two years to learn the truth. It isn't easy to find.
Lots of people believe there are no secrets with Open Source. As it is
there for everybody to see. Unfortunately almost nobody reads the source
code. So bugs that has been there for years are still there.

Well too late for me cause I have Ubuntu *installed* on this EeePC
netbook and it does have full access to the W7 partition. If live is
dangerous this install must be really really dangerous... 8-O

No, Ubuntu installed doesn't use the Windows swapfile. So that is safe.
It is just Ubuntu Live that you have to be careful of. ;-)

Try mounting the partition by attaching the device to a directory.
It's accessible under drive management. Mount to a folder.

You *might* have to keep copies of certain key executables in
the physical folder to coerce Windows into booting...
