ANd they've added a truck to collect "e-waste". I've assumed I'd get the same answer if I asked, but I've been tempted to stand there and if anything interesting appeared, tell the owner "wait, I can actually use that thing...". I don't know if that would work out. I was at one rummage sale about a decade ago, and in among the books, there was a manual for a Radio Shack Model 200 (I think) laptop, very early, but better than the Model 100. I said something to someone, and he said "yes, someone donated one, it was over there...". The poor buyer really could have used the manual. I know for a long time, I'd buy that sort of lone manual, just in case I found matching hardware at some point. Michael

The city council here used to run an annual "Inorganic Rubbish Collection" where people could put anything that could be lifted by two strong men out for collection (there were exceptions for toxic items like paint, oil, car batteries, etc. which had separate drop-off points). They are currently planning to no longer do that because of the large piles of rubbish sitting on the street make the places look messy (for the week around the collection days). There are lots of people complaining about the useful service being stopped, especially as it's yet another council service being dropped while council taxes continue to rise. There are people who purposely drive around digging through the piles to find things they want - usually they're greedy people who then sell them to someone else. It's these people that usually make the biggest mess. For example they break open old CRT TVs to get some of the wiring to sell to recyclers, and leave broken plastic and exposed TV parts all over the place.

Yep, there's a recycling company here in that does a collection at the local university every few months or so. People dropping stuff off aren't even allowed to get out of their car, and the items are unloaded by volunteers. Recently they stopped allowing CRT-based TVs and computer displays.

Had a girlfriend who, out of spite, gave away an entire LP collection of mine. Many of which were worth a fortune, including rare Beatles and Stones stuff, including misprints, early Decca promotional records etc. She gave it to the Salvation Army. I chased down the Salvation Army and found out that some of my Laserdiscs of horror movies had been mixed in, when they saw the horror movies, particularly Cannibal Holocaust, they threw the entire record collection away with the laserdiscs as Satanic and not appropriate to sell in a Christian store! I get sick to this day thinking about it. Needless to say, I stopped seeing her right after this happened. I am just glad my retro-computer stuff was in storage at the time. --- news://freenews.netfront.net/ - complaints: news@netfront.net ---

And this "Life Tip" doesn't just apply to electronics, but to everything. Don't throw things away just because you don't know what it is. Ask. Find out. You should know what something is when you throw it out. -- ]DF$ The Marina IP stack for Apple II-- http://marina.a2hq.com/

Moral of the story is: Don't assume your husband's stuff is worthless, don't question your husband's hobbies, let him hoard as much stuff as he likes and if you happen to outlive him there may be a bitchin' holiday in there for you.
