#836 — shortcut for path

I often want to fire a copy of an email quickly into a certain folder, 
without going through all the palaver of navigating to it.  
(Especially, since I use !Workspace, if it's on a different desktop!)

I want to just type something like "here:<name>" into the Save box.

What command do I need to execute to set up, say,
     news:
to be a short form for
     $.Archivemag.content.!arc2302.news.   ?

*Set News$Path $.Archivemag.content.!arc2302.news.
*Set News$Write $.Archivemag.content.!arc2302.news
(the latter is needed on Select, note: no trailing dot!)

Unfortunately, when I get the Save box for the file I want to save and 
type news:filename I get the message "To save, drag the icon to a 
directory display."

Yet   *show news:   does show that the "set" commands have worked.

I was expecting the same sort of behaviour you get when you type 
$.filename -- ie, a full pathname -- into the Save box.

No. There is no need for the save code to expand anything.

What this suggests is that the save code follows the RISC OS user 
interface guidelines, which say: "If there is no full stop in the user 
supplied save path, then the application should refuse to save to it 
and tell the user: To save, drag the icon to a directory display". 
That rule is supposed to detect non-absolute paths because they would 
cause the file to be saved to a non-obvious location. What the author 
of that guideline did not realize is that you can enter an absolute 
path by starting it with a path: reference.

Some applications (e.g., Zap) check for colons as well and allow you 
to save to such a path, but most still follow that guideline to the 
letter (e.g., Edit, but also EasiWriter and ArtWorks).

To work around that you can use <News$Write>.filename, which does have 
a full stop and is therefore accepted. Of course, that is not quite as 
simple and elegant as the original method.

Thanks Martin for reminding me about that. I now recall I did build
such checks into some of my earlier software, but all my more recent
stuff has been toolbox based. I guess I ought to check and see what
my later stuff actually does!

And MPro, which is my starting point in the present exercise.

I discovered I can add "$." and save to   news:$.filename   -- which 
is almost elegant enuf, anyway quicker than going to a different 
Workspace "desktop" and back, or navigating through a chain of 
directories.

If you're using the same directory all the time to save to, what you need is
a little app that puts a shortcut on the icon bar for that directory and you
then just drop each file onto it.

Ah, I see. FileSwitch turns the ...$Path into a pseudo filing system 
(hence the colon suffix) and you're requesting to look at the root of

Set news$Path $.Archivemag.content.!arc2302.news.

The ...$Path can be used as the colon-suffix path you describe.
Note the trailing space. Described, briefly, in PRM 2-19.

Why?  Why not just keep it in a folder/group/box or whatever your email
client calls its internal collections of mails?

Because in cases like mailing lists, some messages are important enough 
to want to keep, while the rest can be either auto-expired, or archived 
out of the main mailbox (and possibly stuck on a CD-R someplace).

Yes, but in MPro, if you copy the message into another, unexpired, folder,
it won't get expired.  And you can read it easily in a familiar environment.

Nothing has ever been auto-expired on any email/news client I've used. 

Keeping stuff inside the client means being able to take advantage of the
fact that it's decently indexed and easily sorted etc in place.  Moving it
to an external file to some extent makes it immediately harder to find
again.  Of course you can organise those files in some way, but why not just
organise the files/groups/whatever in your email/news client instead?    

Using auto-expiry as a justification is crazy, you might as well try to
convince me that once stored elsewhere it could never be deleted by
accident.  Wherever you put it there'd need to be a decent backup strategy.
