#2686 — Loading a scan into ProCAD+

When requiring to make a drawing of something - like say a PCB - I scan
the PCB on my flat bed scanner, using DPlingScan, and if saved as a
Drawfile can drop it into DrawWorksXL where it comes out as the actual
size, measured against the grid. Doing this with a ruler shows it to be as
accurate as makes no difference.

But not when I do so into ProCAD+. Any tips on how to do this?

Do you mean that printing out is incorrect - or are you measuring the
screen?

Have you a small test example?

Measured by the grid in ProCAD.

If I scan in a say 300mm ruler, save as a Drawfile, and drop that into DW,
it is exactly correct on the grid, ie actual size. Not so with ProCAD.

If I'm copying a PCB, say, smaller than A4 paper size, it's easier to work
in real sizes rather than scale things up or down.

I forwarded this problem to David Snell, ProCAD's author, and he says
his private reply to you has been returned undelivered.  Is that your
real address?

Thanks to Chris for passing this on to David Snell and thanks to him for
contacting me, and in an email today telling me he's sending an upgrade
which should sort it.

Seems it is just down to my lack of knowledge of the basics. (My words,
not his) ;-)

Here's the explanation from his email as it may help others.

I have sorted the apparent resize of sprites when loading
in Draw files in ProCAD+. It happened because the RISC OS
standard pixel size is 90dpi and your scan was 100dpi, hence
the 10% difference. The sprite had been resized in Draw by
changing the size of its bounding box, so this information
is now taken into account by ProCAD+ and the sprite is
accordingly rescaled.

Have you managed to scan mags with PCB's in - and then using 'ProCAD'
reproduce them in vector format?

Probably not as you hope - I just use the scan as a guide to draw them
from. But if the scan is actual size it saves having to scale things.

It would be nice to have software which took a Sprite of something like
this and turned it into a nice crisp Drawfile or whatever. ;-)

David Pilling's 'Trace' can be used as a starting point.  You need to
experiment with its 'Error' setting to get the best results.
