#2743 — Email recovery, from a backed up NewsDir

MPro for Linux ate my inbox for one user on my Iyonix. At least it isn't
an exceedingly important inbox but I am still not happy. MPro on my
Iyonix is v3.29 MPro on linux was connecting via IMAP, offline just to
download Inbox. This setup has worked fine using Apples and other RISC
OS machines as clients. It also worked fine last year with MPro on an
Apple. I will grump on the MPro for Mac/Win/Linux mailing list about
that one.

I have a back up of NewsDir which means I have only lost a few months of
mail (helpful comments about backing up not appreciated). My problem how
do I get the emails out of the backed up NewsDir and into the current
NewsDir. I've moved mail around recently for other users (eleven in
total), so if I just copy the backup then I won't have the recent emails
for the other users.

Is there an easier way than clicking on the backup NewsDir then dragging
out 1632 emails one by one by hand to a folder on the hard drive,
quitting MPro, clicking on the current NewsDir, opening MPro and
dragging and dropping emails into the Inbox?

I also ran DiskKnight immediately and have 4GB of recovered deleted
files. Is there anything I can do with those files? On opening them they
seem to be just jumbled up text.

MPro files are compressed, there is zero possibility of identifying and 
recovering the contents manually from the data DiscKnight retreived. 
Delete your $.Lost+Found directory to regain the free space on the drive.

option
for storing mail. I seem to remember that the freeware version of
Messenger stored mail in plain text.

I have discovered that MPro 6.03 will accept MBox format files created
using Apple Mail 3.0 reasonably well. One caveat is that emails from
Yahoo and similar don't import properly (multi part mime messages?).
So I can see the date and sender and the headers but the email body
text is not visible.

There is! It just a hidden option in the choices/settings files, my 
files are plain text (Messenger Pro 6.03)

I just knew someone would come along and say that. It a long time agao 
since I change mine IIRC it was mentioned on the messenger pro list so 
should be in the archives somewhere, its involves changes something 
from 1 to 0 or other way round.

In !NewsDir.MsgServe.Config set CompressionCutoff=0 (I think; like Chris,
it's been a while).  It won't work retrospectively, AFAIK, so what's
compressed is compressed.

Is there much of a speed boost from using this option?  The main thing I
noticed when moving from NewsBase for storage, many years ago now, was how
slow newsgroup expiry became, and I had assumed this was because of rewriting
big compressed files.  NewsBase saved messages in individual files, which
saved a lot of time when deleting, but of course probably used rather more
disc space especially as most of these files are small.

I suppose there may be a speed difference noticeable in opening big messages
such as those with large JPEGs attached?

I don't know whether it applies to news expiry, but I found that
disabling "Enabling waste basket for news" (Advance options, General)
made a significant difference to how long it took to delete large
numbers of news posts.

If you have this setting on, it may be worthwhile disabling it and
seeing if expiry is faster.

I could give it a go, though I suspect it won't help as none of the items in
my wastebaskey at present are news postings.  They may only end up there if I
actively press delete.

Well, guessing - because I've never used RO MPro - wouldn't you make sure
you're offline (so nothing contemporary can get downloaded and stored in the
okd NewsDir), then start a /copy/ of MPro using the old NewsDir**, then
export the chosen mails to a text file?  Then shutdown that MPro.

Then start the normal MPro using the normal NewsDir and import the contents
of the text file?



** if this is not possible, for example if MPro only works with the contents
of NewsDir plus some other files as well, then it implies that those backups
you didn't want anyone to talk about need to be of all the related files,
and I'd suggest no less often than weekly.
