I don't know whether it applies to news expiry, but I found that
disabling "Enabling waste basket for news" (Advance options, General)
made a significant difference to how long it took to delete large
numbers of news posts.

If you have this setting on, it may be worthwhile disabling it and
seeing if expiry is faster.
