Two people.

Amine chased most people out of this group (and other groups) with his
endless "philosophy" junk. But at least a fraction of the things he
posts are vaguely related to the newsgroup topic, he takes breaks, and
he doesn't change his name or posting details /so/ often. You don't
need to be much of an amateur psychologist to understand that he has
serious bipolar disorder and probably a number of other related issues -
the guy is clearly not well, and needs help and treatment.
Unfortunately there is nothing any of us can do to help him, and we and
the group suffer the consequences of his problems.

The other guy is some kid from Estonia, that posts all manner of junk.
He is just obnoxious and anti-social - his postings are nothing but
mindless vandalism. He sits all day in his room in his parents house,
so bored he "entertains" himself by annoying others. I'm sure he is
smart enough to do something useful with his life, but he's too lazy.
The help he needs is a good kick up the arse, and his computer
confiscated until he gets himself a job.

It occurs to me that Usenet would have benefited enormously from an
early introduction of divisions, with annual promotion and relegation.

Unfortunately, given sufficient morons, no open system can last for
long. Usenet's had a good run.

That's absolutely true. And human stupidity is one of the two things
that is infinite, so there are /always/ sufficient morons.

At least on Usenet you don't see the kind of evil personal abuse that
some people suffer on social media. People might make large numbers of
annoying posts, but they don't dig out your home address and threaten
your dog based on which political party you support. And I've never
seen a Usenet post commenting on someone's physical appearance.

(Though I have been accused on Usenet of being possessed by demons that
speak through me - whether that means I have been the victim of evil
abuse, or the perpetrator, I'm not sure.)

I have been accused of being on MI5 payroll.
</topper>

I have actually been threatened with physical harm on Usenet - someone
threatened to break my nose about 15 years ago, but of course he lacked
the wit to track me down, let alone the courage to face me. As I wrote
nearer the time, "My nose, by the way, remains unbroken."

I am not sure of the relative ranking between MI5 and demon hoards from
hell, but they are probably quite close :-)

When I think about it, I have seen some ugly threats
(sci.electronics.design has some very unsavoury characters), but they
are not remotely realistic. Some people on other social media have to
deal with a level of threat that are credible enough to report to the
police.

And this is very odd because, while I absolutely and uncategorically
agree with you, nevertheless there is a considerable level of censorship
on other social media, so you'd think it would be the other way around.

There is not remotely enough censorship on social media when it comes to
important things, and far too much for unimportant things. The main
problem is that social media is designed to make money for social media
companies. So they allow and encourage the kind of usage that keeps
people on the platform, as that lets them collect more data, show more
ads, etc. Nothing keeps people more interested than conflicts,
scandals, or conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, they censor pictures of
breastfeeding "for the good of the children".

I find myself 50% in agreement with you. I wonder if you can guess which
50%!

That's the joy of censorship - no one will ever agree what what should
be censored!

I read somewhere that one of Trump's close associates had started a new
social media platform that was identical to Twitter, except it was not
going to be censored or limited in any way. After all, politicians
should obviously be free to undermine democracy and promote chaos
through totally unfounded accusations. They should be free to incite
rebellion and armed insurrection against elected government. They
should be free to lie and mislead as much as they want, regardless of
the cost to society and human lives. Laws are for other people, not
politicians.

Of course within hours of opening, the unfiltered and uncensored
platform was swamped with porn and adverts for prostitutes. Who could
have guessed? So the uncensored platform had to start censoring.

You can't have freedom without limitations. You can't have free speech
without limitations. You can't give people the freedom to walk down the
street safely without limiting other people's freedom to fire guns, or
drive at any speed. You can't give people the freedom to live without
insults and prejudice without also limiting people's freedom to insult
and be bigots.

The only questions are where you draw the lines, and who should draw them.
