| Subject | on (not) finding a 64-bit version of readline.dll |
| Message-ID | <86blbt7e82.fsf@example.com> |
I'm looking for a 64-bit version of readline.dll. Here's why. I'm interested in running this very cool shell called Rash. https://github.com/willghatch/racket-rash The package provides a rash-repl.exe binary, but it needs either libedit.dll or libreadline-5.dll. Since I don't have either, I decided the go with libreadline-5.dll, but I only find 32-bit versions online such as the executable-package available at http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/downlinks/readline.php When I run rash-repl.exe, I get C:\Users\x\AppData\Roaming\Racket\7.9>rash-repl.exe ffi-lib: couldn't open "libreadline-5.dll" ([...] errid=126) The message is effectively "The specified module could not be found.; errid=126)". So I libreadline-5.dll in the same directory as rash-repl.exe. C:\Users\x\AppData\Roaming\Racket\7.9>dir libreadline-5.dll [...] 07/03/2005 17:48 229.888 libreadline-5.dll [...] Running it again, I get: C:\Users\x\AppData\Roaming\Racket\7.9>rash-repl.exe ffi-lib: couldn't open "libreadline-5.dll" ([...]; errid=193) The message is effectively "%1 is not a valid Win32 application; errid=193", which suggests me I can't mix 32 and 64-bit code in the same program. --8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8--- %file rash-repl.exe rash-repl.exe: PE32+ executable (console) x86-64 (stripped to external PDB), for MS Windows %file libreadline-5.dll libreadline-5.dll: PE32 executable (DLL) (console) Intel 80386 (stripped to external PDB), for MS Windo --8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8--- So, I'm looking for a 64-bit version of readline, which seems not easy to find on the web. I appreciate any help. By the way, I don't know from the top of my head any windows-specific newsgroup for this type of question. I suppose many here run Windows and are users of the GNU readline library, but feel free to follow-up with a more adequate newsgroup. I'd follow suit. Thank you!

Unfortunately, the earliest x64 version of MSYS2 (20150916) contains readline v6, instead of v5. https://repo.msys2.org/distrib/x86_64/ Though, there's a high chance that the v6 API is not backward compatible with v5.

That could explain why my first attempt at loading v8 did not work. I did not conclude anything yet and will look at it more carefully, but this might be the reason. What doesn't help, perhaps, is that the message I still get is that it can't find libreadline-5.dll when I put the file right there on the same directory as the executable. I would indeed like to try with v5 if I could. I suppose v6 has more changes than v8. Thanks!

I had no idea they had the msys2 project. I was still using MinGW, therefore msys1. In my mind, I'm still calling the project MinGW, not ``msys2''. Anyway, I installed it, threw my msys1 away. Things look brighter now. I'm still to see if rash-repl.exe will run with the new library. The one that came was ``readline8.dll'' --- or something like that. I'll report back. Thanks again!

Wish I could help; I've got Win 7 32 bit. alt.comp.os.windows-10 is still quite active, I would post there. In addition: alt.comp.os.windows-xp alt.windows7.general alt.comp.microsoft.windows are Are somewhat active, just lesser so. I'd try cross posting in all four groups. Best of luck!

You could use the 32-bit version of Rash as well as Racket if Rash's functionality is crucial, or if it'll be used for something which requires more than 3GB of memory.

(I didn't get the comment on the 3GB-memory. I thought that maybe 32-bit would let me use less memory, but I'm not sure what the limit is.) That's another interesting idea. I can install a 32-bit of Racket and then install Rash. I wouldn't mind running a 32-bit Rash at all. I can even delete Racket 32-bit after building Rash. The installation is easy: https://mirror.racket-lang.org/installers/8.0/racket-8.0-i386-win32-bc.exe I'll report back what happened. By the way, I thought Racket was supposed to come with a ``libedit.dll'' (with this or similar name), but at least on the recent versions for Windows, it does not. Thank you all for such great assistance. You guys keep the USENET spirit alive. That's priceless.
