My ATT 5g is pretty BAD. CRAP signal.

So, did sign up, I *think*, for Starlink,
the tier-2 service. Allegedly $85/Month
with superior speed claimed.

We shall SEE what's delivered to my
address.

NO really GREAT place to install ... but
if I cut down ONE shrub at the corner of
the house ... a 2" electric pipe with
some concrete at the bottom, MAY get a
fair signal. Even a HALF signal would
be better than ATT. MIGHT have to
engineer a better mounting scheme, but
I have the skills/stuff. Know a guy
I can hire too, in case I want it all
done in stainless steel.

HOW all this works ... not entirely sure.
THINK they deliver a 'kit' - an antenna
and cable and wifi router. Amazon offers
'better' antennas and longer cables. We'll
SEE what's needed. WILL have to drill a new
hole in the wall. Bought the concrete bits
six months ago.

Anyway, have more and more 'problems' with ATT.
Only 'help' is from Bangalore alas. The reps
do NOT hear 'english' very well. Already have
a major prob there. Expect two or three DAYS
to resolve that. Hateful. Giant corps really
DON'T care much about their customers.

Don't expect that to change. May get WORSE.

In any case, badly NEED an alt internet service
so I can pay vital bills and such. Do NOT trust
ATT to always be ready.

Starlink sign-up, a bit STRANGE. Not 101% sure
I've got everything I need. DID put it on a CC,
so if needed I CAN block 'em out. USA, far more
protections for CC purchases than via direct
routing-number stuff. GOOD !

Anyway, they PROMISE speeds a bit better than
anything my ATT unit can deliver. True ? Who
knows yet. Will report.

The 2nd-tier plan ... you pay just a bit more
up-front, but then they drop a bunch of fees
for the hardware and such. Supposedly 80+ gb/s.
That's five times my typical ATT data rate.
TWO times, stable, would be WORTH IT.

Anyway, WILL report here. Then you can make
better decisions. The major phone carriers,
NOT always so good. Complex and often SHIT
signal no matter what they promise. If you
have fiber, great, but they're NOT gonna
install it for MY place for a variety of
reasons - and frankly don't want them to
drill holes in my walls, likely to hit
some electric wires. 1950 house - concrete
and real wood and NO good blueprints.

MAY have to build a new house - horrible and
expensive but true. Have a spare lot, but
even clearing a few trees, the govt will
charge HUGE fees. Major rip-off scam !

Now if you default on the property, they'll
give some developer free reign and LOW costs.
Seen that already. SCAM !!! - and this is
a 'red' state !

COULD move to east Texas of course - but
that'd be a Big Deal. Also finding some
place near a good hospital, just in case ...

WANT a 'generous' 2-1/2 by 1/2 up on pilings.
Do NOT need giant tubs full of water fer sure.
WHY do people WANT that ??? Very 19th century.

Using pre-fab concrete sections is the best/
fastest way to go. DO need a rather large
'storage'/garage bit too. Note may NOT be
able to climb, or maybe even walk, for TOO
much longer. Age SUCKS. Gotta arrange a
front entrance where an electric/hydraulic
LIFT can be easily installed. That'll be
interesting. THINK it can be done, discretely.
Maybe a 4x4 base plate that can ride up ... ???

Something wrong with the numbers here. 80+ GIGABITS? No way!!!
80 MEGA bits may be possible, as a linkspeed within a transmission
frame, but not as a sustained data rate.

What kind of a default are you talking about ... you mean if you stop
paying your property taxes?

As for zoning and permits, I would expect that a new owner would have
similar rules as you currently have. So are the fees high (for you) or
are they low (for someone else) ??

2-1/2 by 1/2 OF WHAT? Inches, feet or meters? Dimensions of floor joists
or thickness of concrete?

I have the cheapest StarLink residential plan that is 100 Mbps.

DOWNLOAD Mbps 104.99
UPLOAD Mbps 27.10

Actually, I think the Starlink issue is about guiding Ukrainian drones
to hit Russian targets.

Exactly, The targets being incoming Russian drones.

I don't think starlink operates over Russia any more anyway

No, there are two issues.

One, is the missing intelligence on incoming Russian misiles and drones.
They accuse Trump for this.

Two, is the failure of Starlink for Ukranian drones, which miss the
connection, have to drop speed while they automatically wait for the
Starlink to come back, and are easier targets, they are killed easily.
They blame Elon Musk for this.

They are probably correct

> Two, is the failure of Starlink for Ukranian drones, which miss the
> connection, have to drop speed while they automatically wait for the
> Starlink to come back, and are easier targets, they are killed easily.
> They blame Elon Musk for this.

Not quite. The issues is that over Ukraine, drones used for defense -
interceptors - which are necessarily fast, can no longer use starlink
due to high speed nodes having been filtered out

It targets EXPLICITLY interceptors, Defense drones and has the sole
effect of enabling Russian drones to do more damage to civilians.

It does not affect Ukraine's ability to launch strike drones or
missiles, as the latest data shows they are still ripping Russian IT,
logistics and fuel infrastructure to shreds

Taken together the intention is clear., To give Russia a tactical
advantage in attacking Ukrainian civilian and infrastructure targets

Ultimately there are ways around it, but it appears to be a desperate
calling in of favours by Putin as his country collapses around him

It has coincided with at least two articles I have seen in two UK media
sources essentially saying the same thing - how Ukraine is on the point
of collapse, morale has gone and Russia cannot lose. What a coincidence....

...not.

The war is a death grip now. Neither side can affird to stop or the
other will win immediately .

Ukraine is supported economically by a coalition of European and
Western nations all giving what they can. Their combined economies
outvalue Russias by at least 10:1.

And are larger than the USAs

Ukraine and the Western alliance are winning. Even now, on the
battlefield, with the retaking of huge tracts of the Donbas formerly
under Russian control.

Anyway, if you search around a bit you can fund out for yourself what is
going on and put two and two together

But fundamentally Russia cannot outlast the combination of a unified
west, so promoting disunity is his only hope.

Unfortunately for him, Trump and the USA are not as indispensable as
they like to think they are.

Today, everyone assumes that Trump will chicken out and will always
abandon his former allies to lick Putin's arse, and plan accordingly.

Trump said that Europe wasn't puling its weight and the USA wouldn't
stand by and live up to its treaties and promises.

We assumed that was true, and set about life without the USA . It has
proved easier than he thought.

--
The biggest threat to humanity comes from socialism, which has utterly
diverted our attention away from what really matters to our existential
survival, to indulging in navel gazing and faux moral investigations
into what the world ought to be, whilst we fail utterly to deal with
what it actually is.

   Politics 101 - blame ANYONE but yourself ! :-)

Reality ... missiles and jet drones are HARD to
see coming and HARD to intercept in time. It's
a tech gap however, not so much anyone's "fault".
Israel can do it - but won't sell 'IronDome' to
anyone else. Hey, that system has been around for
kind of a LONG time now ... why no knock-offs ???
   Somebody slacked-off ........

> Two, is the failure of Starlink for Ukranian drones, which miss the

Note Russia may be messing with the signal.
All the "Blame Musk/Trump" - smells of
   wartime propaganda.

>> I don't think starlink operates over Russia any more anyway

Not so much. Not much inside Iran either. The
uplink signal CAN be detected and some very
unpleasant people will show up in the dead
of night ... operative word 'dead'.

Anyway, GOT my StarLink - big brown box. The
site says I don't have to activate IF I bought
directly from StarLink, which I did.

Charged up and updated my hated iPad tonight.
Tomorrow will see if it can run the app. If
not, there may be other work-arounds if I can
find the default IP address for the router.
Would rather NOT call the "installer" - no good
way/place to "install" right now anyway, odd
topography, will have to MAKE a special mount.
However, if necessary, the tech can at least
get it online and I can go on from there at
   my own speed.

General note - the "big sail" design for the
antennas SUCKS ! And NO they're not gonna
drill holes in my roof. First 60+ MPH gust
and it'll tear a huge chunk out of my roof
and then fly into the neighbors house !
Need FOUR CORNER mounts, maybe something you
can tapcon into a concrete wall.

Know a guy with a shop who can weld aluminum ...
   custom-design holder frame ?

Note : DID get the damned thing to WORK ... actually
   using it now.

Buy direct from StarLink and there's no 'activation'.
There was no "KIT" number on ANYTHING where they
suggested - a concern - but apparently this was all
   taken care of.

It's sitting out on my front step, gonna have to
rig a proper mount. BEST orientation is ENE for me.
The thing, frequency, seems to just HATE trees.
I've got shitload of big trees ......

   Speed - 110 to 190 mbps ... my ATT router is 25mbps
typically if everything's good. Did full updates
   while I'm connected ... quick !

My AIM for this thing is more of a BACKUP in case
my ATT stuff goes to shit (again). Really not likely
to USE it all that much. But, gotta have a backup ...
   pay credit cards and such.

But STILL can't seem to get at the actual ROUTER SETTINGS
shit quite yet, despite downloading what SEEMS to be the
correct Starlink 'app' on my iPad. The fucking router
has NO direct access to the settings, HAVE to do them
through an 'app'. Horrible design ! Was NOT gonna buy
a $700+ phone just to tweak their router. DID have the
fucking iPad from a previous misadventure, so ... I'll see.

HATE iPads/Apple. 101% NOT "intuitive" for ME. Just
not wired that way - plus the devices seem to be
   designed to frustrate/obfuscate sane adjustments.

1) From what you say, this was designed as a consumer device.
One of the ways to make tech devices "safe" for consumers
is to not let the customer screw with ïmportant" settings.

The router device I got from Frontier has no user documentation.
The help desk tech that you can get to talk to on the phone
(if you are lucky) can talk you into a command line. It includes
a WiFi radio, which I can't turn off, and which appears to
project as separate SSID for other Frontier customers to
use when they are in the neighborhood. The software/firmware
in it is custom built for Frontier, and there is no manual
available from Frontier, from the French manufacturer or
findable from a web search. But it gives me a static
IP address on the wired interface, and I take it from there
    to my own edge router.

2) There is no reason to buy a new iPhone. You can get a
low-to-mid-range Android phone gently used for $150 or less.
I have one myself as a spare: Motorola Moto Stylus.
Look on Amazon for a good selection.

3) Small touchscreens have limitations that dictate a user
interface very different from a computer screen with a
mouse. No right-click and no keyboard shortcuts with
multiple mode-shifting keys like control, alt, alt-gr
    etc.

I share a lot of background with you (career-wise, at least) and yet we
are different enough that I can gain some insights from you that I don't
get from the people I hang out with in the flesh. I know you - and the
other "old geeks" here enough to enjoy our chats here, so it hurts me to
have to say this:

You seem to think that because you used to write code for techies you
are hot shit and the young folks that work for the consumer tech
companies should respect you and give you their cheat codes. Forget it,
you are just an old cranky geezer to them. Live with it.

Oh absolutely. Non technical people get a thrill out of working out how
the thing works. Technical people want to get their thrill out of making
it work the way they want. Which is why Apple products are the darlings
of the totally non technical user. They flatter their egos.

Gordon Bennet. That sounds like the worst of British Telecomm in spades.
Their supplied routers also regularly crashed, the support was simple
'unplug them from the power, and plug them in again;

No need to install the antenna up there. It will work just the same
on the ground, or outside your window.

I have a relatively flat roof so it was convenient. I did drill a hole in
an exterior wall to run the cable. I'm hoping I can sneak the cable for my
external LoRa antenna through the same hole before I throw on some duct
seal.

If you install a tube that when getting outside points down, you do not
need to seal the hole, it is water safe. Not wind safe, though. Then,
just stick a bit of foam, can be removed to replace the cable 15 years
forward ;-)

I may be surprised but I don't think I have to worry about maintenance
tasks in 15 years.

I live where there may be hurricanes, or serious
winter storm fronts, with very HIGH winds.

As such, the traditional mounting schemes fronted
by SL and even Amazon parts suppliers are NOT good
at all. 90% of the USA, just fine, but not HERE.

The SL antennas are perfect 'airfoils' ... seem
   designed to take flight.

Only ONE place along my house where I can put in
an anchored post and holder frame. Gotta figure
the easiest way to tilt the antenna just right
and skew it to a non-cardinal direction. 2.5"
   galv-steel plumbing/electrical pipe should serve
as the post. May want to put a little concrete
into the hole, then a couple of v-supports screwed
to the wall. The 'holder', aluminum angle with
some hard rubber retainers screwed in at the corners.
Gotta attach that, rotatable, lockable, to the post.
Not SUPER difficult, but still a bit complex. Do
not see ANYTHING like it for sale online.

Trick, gotta be able to detach the entire antenna
assembly fast if a bad storm is approaching.

It DID work out near my doorstep yesterday, speed
peaking at about 200mbps, 150 typical.

Next problem, access to the router settings. May
or may not have the correct app on my iPad. Used
the antenna-orientation one yesterday but no way
to access the router. Seems the wifi comes with the
name STARLINK and NO kind of security code. That's
an open invitation to the neighbors and whatever
   crimes they are doing.

Admittedly, I bought this as a 'backup' to my ATT
system. It IS faster, but really I don't need faster.
I need to be able to do online billing/banking in
case of disaster. The No-Towers paradigm IS best.

By Woden I do hate iPads/iOS ... what stoners
thought that up ??? Gimme Win98/XP menus and
an "X" at the corner to shut down the app !
Had to SEARCH just to find out how to turn
   off the damned iPad.
