Which is kinda strange. It seems like it should be easier to really do it as a true device interface. It would be easier for quick-and-dirty programs than the socket interface. A magic filename would only be useful if it worked everywhere or if you were only targetting the platform(s) that supported it. All the failure modes would have to be compressed into a single errno value. In contrast getaddrinfo+socket+connect is only a few lines of code, it works everywhere, and you can easily tell the end user which part of the process failed, when it doesn’t work. > Maybe the problem is the DNS lookup would have to be done below the > kernel boundary? The Linux kernel can already call up to userspace to do DNS lookups: https://docs.kernel.org/networking/dns_resolver.html -- https://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/

Plan9 did something like this at the kernel level. The approach never caught on anywhere else. Perhaps because it’s a waste of time ...

Not really. The Plan9 network API is more file-based than the sockets
API, but it’s not particularly similar the hostname-in-filename model
offered by Bash. Rather it is, roughly speaking, the sockets API
rephrased as open()/read()/write(). For example to create a connection,
socket() would be replaced by open("/net/tcp/clone") and connect() would
be replaced by write(fd, "connect address!port").
See https://9p.io/magic/man2html/3/ip for details.

Just of loosely related historical interest, AmigaOS not Unix in the
first place of course, but the TCP/IP stacks on it would usually provide
a "TCP:" handler, so you could e.g. (from
https://wiki.amigaos.net/wiki/AmiWest_2013_Lesson_4#Connect_to_the_Server )
fileh = fopen("TCP:www.wunderground.com/80","r+");

Convenient for simple cases, of course. How did it deal with, e.g.
binding to an explicit source port, setsockopt(2), and handling of
“URG” data?

I think it really only covered simple cases, indeed. There was the
bsdsocket.library api provided anyway that mimicked the bsd socket api
from unix closely (see http://www.pjhutchison.org/tutorial/network.html )
The TCP: handler was thus the high-level convenience, but you could use
it anywhere you could open a file including the shell i.e. it's slotting
in as a system-wide amiga dos file handler, _not_ just being interpreted
internally by the shell.
https://aminet.net/package/comm/net/AmiTCP-bin-30b2 - file
doc/inet-handler.doc in that .lha archive discusses TCP: for the AmiTCP
case (other later tcp/ip stack impls could have extended it I suppose,
but I'd have to check if any actually did, they generally had back
compat with AmiTCP),
It only documents it allowing host and port or symbolic service name
like from /etc/services (and apparently some special "obtain" thing for
connections coming from inetd, inetd super-server often the done thing
on unix and amiga at the time)

Is this actually useful in the present? I ask because I stopped checking
Weather Underground when it started requiring features that did not
exist in one of the Fennec installs I have and in SeaMonkey, and this
with JS enabled.
Did I overlook something to access at least some of the information
(granted, that'd not be at the website top-level)? Or is this just being
used as an illustrative example?

Not intending to suggest actual utility or otherwise of present-day
wunderground.com site in particular, hah, indeed just illustrative
example I happened to copy-paste verbatim from the
https://wiki.amigaos.net/wiki/AmiWest_2013_Lesson_4#Connect_to_the_Server
page
(that page then goes into how to make a http protocol get request with
the opened file that is really the tcp stream)
Note there were various higher-level handlers e.g. FTP: for ftp sites
specifically, somewhat similar conceptually (if not in detail) to
current linux fuse curlftpfs, allowing remote ftp sites to appear as
part of the vfs.
