Just not Trump. > The USA has funded 60% of NATO. The point is not what is happening now, but what NATO was, if it was reasonable for Russia to view NATO expansion as a threat. Reasonable to view NATO as an extension of USA power. When Russia said it was threatened by NATO, the MSM response was that NATO is purely defensive. This is of course silly. NATO has been used in aggressive actions, Yugoslavia, Libya, etc. Donald Trump himself believed NATO countries should aid him in a war of aggression in Iran. The fact that Trump has gone off the deep end and the cost of supporting him is now too expensive does not conceal that he exposed the western fictions. Fictions about a defensive alliance, rule based order, etc. As Mark Carney admitted, the traditional "rules-based order" was an illusion or partial fiction where powerful nations—particularly the United States—exempted themselves when convenient. So in short it was reasonable for Russia to be concerned about NATO in Ukraine. Reasonable to believe that the US would use NATO as an extension to its power to exert economic and political dominance.

Of all the NATO countries, Poland is the closest to Iran. Of nations that are stable and westernized. The SE eastern Balkan nations are not a place to store weapons. Germany is politically pacifist. Turkey of course is closer but its been a bit questionable (and Islamic) since forever. Poland was the obvious place. Putin saying that NATO wanted Russia as is as stupid as saying that the UK wanted Southern Ireland. What would we do with it?? All we actually wanted was oil gas grain and fertilizer. And we didn't care who ran it, or what they did inside its borders. As long as it didn't start destabilizing other countries. Like Northern Ireland or Ukraine,. -- “There are two ways to be fooled. If it was, then he did exactly the wrong thing, since NATO now has two more members and a huge amount more funding from Europe, due to his activities in Ukraine. In short his propaganda lie has become true. If he is a clever and reasonable man, why did he do that? Of course the USA never gave two fucks about Ukraine. And in terms of its political and economic dominance, Donald has completely destroyed that. All he understands is how to puff out his enormous gut and lie convincingly to his fellow stupid Americans. Who just love being told how great they are, even if the price of gas has doubled, they have made utter idiots of themselves over Iran and they get jeered at every time they step off a plane anywhere else in the world. Even Canada is sick of them. Europe has been doing war, ever since the end of the last ice age. We are, if we have to be, very good at it, And we take the attitude that it is not a spectacle of shock and awe, to impress the natives, any more, but a dirty little job, like clearing a blocked sewer, that someone has to do. We have taught Ukraine how to do it, WE have sold them what weapons we had that would be useful in it, and we have marvelled how good they are at it, in particular the way they force-multiplied the number of personnel, by giving then unmanned weapons instead of tanks, and taught them the real lessons of WWII which is not about 'how the Americans won the war for the stupid Brits' 'with god (and John Wayne) on their side' and 'better tanks and aeroplanes', but rather how the actual war was slow, boring, steady process of probing the enemies weaknesses, like their Enigma machines, and their idiot populist leaders, developing key technologies (mostly in the UK). and using every man woman and child to their utmost to fight a professional integrated war against the supply lines, the factories and and the massed ranks using smarter technology, smarter intelligence and smarter strategies. While maintaining our own supply lines to a hinterland and Empire that supported us, if not with direct help, with the goods necessary to feed the war machine. If you related that to Trump, he wouldn't understand it, let alone believe it. His generals would, But they have all been fired, or resigned. Which is why Europe has staggered in disbelief, and finally realised that Trump has no grand plan, no cunning, stratagem, and is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. And also that Putin is no master chess player either. Not when it comes to actual open hot war, rather than the cold war of destroying his 'enemies' from within. He assumed that more tanks and more men and a West that had always let him get away with it and a fully paid up asset in the White House would ensure a walkover in days. You wont find anything that is key or significant or strategic in the media,. All they want is glorious battles lost and call of duty played with real guns Wake up. War is not what you think it is. And its not what Putin or Trump think it is either. No one in NATO gave a tuppeny fuck about Russia *as long as it stayed in Russia*. It was simply that traditionally it had never been content with that. As it turns out, not spending more money on useless American Hi Tech weaponry and cannon fodder was actually serendipitous: we have money to spare for what we actually need. Highly advanced but cheap unmanned weapons, and a strategy to use them. The game is now to subdue Russia and Iran, not by sending troops, but working with our actual allies in Europe, Canada, SE Asia and Australasia and the Middle East, to work out how to counter the asymmetric threats and build a war machine that will dismantle the enemy's without doing too much harm to civilians. And at best cost. Trump has Made America Irrelevant Again. We have learnt to nod politely and ignore it, If it wants to destroy itself following another stupid populist leader, this time on the so called right, instead of left, we don't have the ability to alter that and interfering would not be productive. My point was not about Putin, but about Russia's geopolitical concerns. My guess would be that a Russian version of you would be complaining that lack of a Russian response to NATO expansion in 1999, and 2004 was appeasement. The only way to treat a bully was to stand up to it. There is of course a cost to standing up to a bully, but in the long run the price paid is worth it. I presume Putin hoped an initial show of force would be enough. It wasn't, but it might well be that the cost of a nominal change in the status of Finland and Sweden was less important than a very real change in the status of Ukraine. There is also an argument that a show of force now deters future NATO expansion in other countries. I don't support Russia, like a football team. I would be happy if Ukraine could win and there was peace. I would be happy if Russia could win and there was peace. I would be happy with a draw and there was peace. Mainly I would like cheap Russian gas, low military spending, and a reduced fear of nuclear war. My problem is that I don't see any way Ukraine can win, without huge cost to everyone. > Of course the USA never gave two fucks about Ukraine. Illusory. China wants nothing from Russia except its land in the east
and it will get that once Ukraine weakens Russia enough.
Its already building towns and factories there.

No. They wont. The islamists are in power and they dare not let go. They

Not exactly. International banking and commerce has a power all its own:

You do talk such bollocks.
It was never that simple

Well the actual propellants are essentially the same, only the
stabilisers have changed I think. So it probably smells the same

So it probably smells the same https://crimefictionbook.com/2015/04/30/whats-the-smell-cordite-vs- gunpowder-vs-propellant/ I've never smelled cordite so I wouldn't know. I do use several different formulations of smokeless powder and each has a distinctive smell. None of them smells like black powder, which definitely isn't smokeless and smells like the devil farted. Writers can tell a good tale but often aren't that familiar with their props, hence the .12 gauge shotgun and so forth. There was one writer who did know his stuff. He liked to troll the readers by having his man switch the safety off on his revolver. Howls of protest followed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webley%E2%80%93Fosbery_Automatic_Revolver Some German revolvers had safeties, and a few models had a grip safety. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_&_Wesson_Safety_Hammerless The hero just happened to carry one of the rare models.

Did fire some Cordite-loaded 303 cartridges. They worked fine. The 'smell' though isn't THAT much different from any common smokeless powder. It's all basically the same stuff - just in different physical configuration. "Cordite" - a rod - seems to miss filling the cartridge case fully however. You might get superior ballistics, at similar pressures, with more modern ball or flake powders. My brother had an old Enfield. SEEMED robust but kinda scared me. As I recall there's only ONE locking lug on the bolt. Gimme M98 with its THREE lugs instead !!! :-)

Iran most certainly did, via Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.
Not to mention the hordes of bearded muthas shouting Allah Akbar! in
Europe's streets.
"The Iranian government uses these proxy groups to extend its political
power, fight its rivals, and threaten other countries without starting
direct wars.
Major Iran-Backed Groups
================
Hezbollah (Lebanon): Formed with Iranian help in 1982, this Shia
Muslim political and military group receives most of its money, weapons,
and training from Iran. It operates in Lebanon and has launched regular
attacks against Israel.
Hamas (Gaza): This Sunni Muslim group governs the Gaza Strip and
has received financial aid, weapons, and military training from Iran
since the early 1990s.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ): Operating mainly in Gaza, PIJ
works closely with Iran and receives heavy financial and military
support to fight against Israel.
The Houthis (Yemen): Also known as Ansar Allah, this rebel group
controls parts of Yemen. Iran provides them with weapons and guidance to
fight regional opponents and disrupt shipping lanes.
Iraqi Militias: Groups like Kataib Hezbollah, the Badr
Organization, and Asaib Ahl al-Haq operate inside Iraq. Iran funds and
trains these groups to increase its influence and target international
forces.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
