Certainly I'm aware of that, just as I'm aware much of the MSM is either
government or NGO propaganda. Compare the reports taking in consideration
the biases and you may glimpse the real story.

For example, while some of the articles became more balanced today's hot
headline was

"Russian strike near Kyiv kills 37, in one of the year's deadliest
attacks"

https://www.npr.org/2026/08/29/nx-s1-5948714/russian-strike-kyiv

Dastardly attack on civilians! As the story got fleshed out it seems the
Russians had hit a drone depot that was next to a home for elderly
citizens. It's not clear how many of the personnel working in the depot
were killed but as might be expected the facility, chock full of high
explosives meant for Russian, blew up.

Even Zelensky held a press conference promising to hunt down whoever made
such a bad decision. It's not the first time civilians have been killed
when an attack on a legitimate military target in a residential
neighborhood wound up with dead civilians.

You should be familiar with the process. The air attacks on Coventry's
heavy industry did damage to the countryside, in part because of the
success of the plan to decoy the bombers from the factories. That gave
Lindemann and Bomber Harris the latitude to specifically bomb residential
areas, dehousing, since it was easier to get rid of the civilian workforce
than target heavily defended legitimate sites.

Most UK media doesn't report at all, or only reports pro Russian stuff.

Its always about how well Russia is doing, and never about the fact that
Russia is pretty much on the point of total collapse, threatening
nuclear strikes on Britain.

Probably the two best commentators are - surprisingly - Americans . Jake
Broe and Paul Warburg on you tube.

The Ukra8inin commentators are unsurprisingly more partisan

I think that is not actually quite correct, buy I haven't fact checked it.

The fact does remain that Russia bombs Ukraine indiscriminately with no
regard for civilian life.

Ukraine is somewhat more circumspect, but it's war and shit inevitably
happens

The problem is that the Russian kit is simply not accurate, They may
claim they are after a military target in the Donbas but it overshot and
landed on a block of flats in Kyiv.
I personally don't believe them. Its pure terrorism.

Accuracy in WWII was to the nearest two miles. Ukrainian drones are
hitting individual aircraft on runways and individual distillation
towers in oil plants and individual Wildberry warehouses.

Usually if there is any collateral damage it's because the drones were
disabled first and debris fell on civilian areas.

Russia no longer has access to Starlink, but Ukraine does.

Putin is on the edge of being deposed. His 'elections' are due. He is
desperate to be able to say 'NATO attacked us 'and we are winning in
Ukraine'. But the banks have closed their doors and people cannot
withdraw cash, there is no gasoline West of the Urals and not much
diesel, 50% of the distilleries are out of action and nearly all
Wildberries warehouses are gone.

Putin is hitting civilians because his armaments are mostly crap. The
ones that get through - the supersonic ballistic missiles - are simply
not very accurate, and the subsonic drones are mostly being shot down,
So they are going to miss. Putin doesn't care. He is a war criminal
already and a few more civilian lives are not going to change that.

Ukrainians at least want to be able to appear to be civilised after the
war is over.

The balanced view would be to let them solve their own problems that have

If you wanted that you should not have guaranteed the Ukrainians defence
against Russia when they gave up all their nuclear weapons.

But we have come to understand that America never makes promises it

Generic you noted. Trust me, the policies of the US government do not
reflect my wishes.

It's not trustworthy over the course of one administration let alone
successive administrations with differing goals that will reverse the last
one's policies. If you want long term stability a representative democracy
is not the way to go.

But on the other hand, business and prosperity require the mutual
adoption of a set of rules that transcend the issues of immediate profit.

E.g a nation that routinely confiscates goods destined for its citizens,
will find that it is not profitable to do business with. It becomes
isolated. You might call it North Korea.

Businesses that do not keep to handshake contracts require legal ones
and the means to enforce them,. At some point that makes them too
expensive to do business with.
Yes, I was all ready to sue the Ford Motor Company when unexpectedly
they paid up. I had known people who had worked for them, so I was ready.
Nations that think that everybody has to do business with them no matter
what tariffs they impose, run by someone who pretends he was actually a
business man, rather than a failed small time bully in the real estate
business,are in for a shock.

If you want to do business, you need a stable environment. Democracy or
otherwise.

That means keeping your word, to build trust and respect.

No one trusts or respects the USA any more. Even Iran's leadership is
laughing.

But they don't have commercial ties. The rest of us are quietly untying
them.

I think this is in reference to the 1994 Trilateral Statement, which is
not a particularly strong security assurance: it only applies in cases
where nuclear weapons are used and the commitment is only to seek UN
Security Council action.

https://nsarchive.gwu.edu/document/30922-document-10-january-14-trilateral-statement-january-14-1994

(The flaw should have been apparent even at the time: Russia would veto
any proposed UNSC action after nuking Ukraine.)

Unless there are further assurances somewhere, I don’t think the USA has
broken a promise here by limiting its support for Ukraine (just made a
serious mistake).

Nuclear weapons was not a primary objective to the Budapest memorandum.
In it Belaurs Ukraine and Khazakstan were guaranteed independence
provided they played nice with Russia.

Only Russian propgandists claim that the nuclear attack was all that was
contained within it

Well it depends on how explicit the promises were.
The West has allowed the USA to sell it arms and run its defence policy
on the understanding that all that money spent on US kit and US bases
would actually mean something when the shit hit the fan, and that it
would be supported, and work, if a threat to NATO countries were apparent.

It turns out that like so much US hardware, it was junk, and would only
work if the parent company let it, and could only be serviced by the
parent company at huge expense. Think John Deere. Think Microsoft.

And all that came out because a corrupt president who owed the Russians
his whole existence, used his powers to stop it being used.

We are thankful we got the message before it got any further.

   ?Que?

Swedes never really became Rus - at least
   not for 1500+ years.

   Different cultures. Different 'takes'.

Those who became Rus - SUPER hard-asses.

Never, ever, discount what they're willing
do do for power/dominance. We've SEEN that
in the 20th century, even a little before.
Suffer massive MASSIVE casualties and pain
   to EVENTUALLY destroy the Foe.

NEVER assume the Rus will act in what most
of the world thinks is a 'sane' manner. That
is not their culture and history.

Vlad has burned up at LEAST half a million
in his war against Ukraine. Russians don't
even blink at that. Russia is NOT the UK
   or USA.

   HARD-asses in the old meaning.

Dead, yes, permanently disabled, probably another million.
He's walked through every cold war tank he ever had,
He has gone cap in hand to the N. Koreans for out of date artillery shells.
His whole black sea fleet is destroyed and the ports in the sea of Azov
are burning.
He is down to his last AWACS aircraft.
50% of his oil refineries are off line.,
40% of his biggest logistics firm is destroyed.
China is quietly building businesses and towns in his far east.

> Russians don't even blink at that. Russia is NOT the UK or USA.

HE doesn't blink. Russians simply don't know until it affects them
personally. It's safer to believe what they are told and look the other way.

And no one comes back from the front lines if it can be helped. They are
recycled with horrendous wounds until they die, mostly. They aren't
allowed mobile phones any more. The internet has been disabled
officially. The banking system is teetering on the edge of total collapse.

But they are being told that they are winning.

Democracy has a lot of problems, but its not THAT bad

   Proto-Rus/Scandis migrated up along the
Caucuses about 15+ thousand years ago,
   following the melting ice-age glaciers.
Some went east, some went west. There was
   considerable east/west cross-pollination
   for a long time.

Really NOT much genetic diff between Swedes
and Finns and today's Russians. Some shared
cultural stuff too ... at least up thru the
   "Viking Age".

The Rus became MUCH more hard-ass though
   and, important note, REMAIN so.

Finns are a geneticist's dream, and not in a good way.

https://www.discovermagazine.com/finlands-fascinating-genes-1282

Culturally Finland is quite different. Supposedly Tolkein pattern some of
the language in the LOTR on Finnish since it was so different from the
western Germanic languages. He also drew from the Kalevala, which again
differs from the Germanic corpus.

Wrong. Russia marks the westerrnmost extent of the Mongol Empire, and
Russia is not just Moscow and St Petersburg (though it might as well be)
Russia extends all the way to the pacific and is split into two main
ethnicities - maybe three - once east of the Urals. The ice dwelling
northern Tundra peoples, the central Mongolian type steppe dwellers and
the chinese descendants in the south east.

Further south it shades into the middle eastern Turkic peoples of the
'stans..

Under the Tsars, who westernized, the serfs remained in their place.
The Russian revolution stirred things up and some of the serfs started
to get power. And now we have the whole political apparatus run by a
fairly primitive man. The heir to Ghengis Khan.

When you deal with Putin, you are not dealing with a sophisticated
Western mind, you are dealing with a ruthless savage and cunning mind
that has no respect for western culture at all - and indeed fears it as
essentially capable of destroying him and his whole apparatus of repression.

The one saving grace is that he is cunning, not really intelligent. Just
like the Donald

Well that was a long time ago. Russians today *look* different. Mad Bad
Vlad has a distinctly Asian look. As do many of his compatriots, and
indeed people in Estonia and other neighbouring countries.

Whereas the Slavic peoples of eastern Europe and Scandinavia look -
different. as do the more Germanic people of western Europe, let alone
the Mediterranean peoples

Western Russia is where the Mongol Hordes were finally checked.
Ultimately they comprised more Turkic peoples than Mongolian, at least
in the West. As far as China is concerned they were in fact mongol/chinese.

Most people have realised that Putins oligarchs simply do not *think*
the same way that westerners do. And the ones that did are now somewhere
else keeping their heads down

The Slavic peoples are the buffer zone. Ukraine Belarus some parts of
west Russia, then Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Sorbs, Kashubians, and
Silesians. And further south Serbs, Croats, Bulgarians, Slovenes,
Bosniaks, Macedonians, and Montenegrins.

These people, who were all part of the USSR, all chose not to be when
the chance came.

While Russia may indeed carry some of that culture, it also carries the
culture of Ghengis Khan, the man who built the biggest land empire the
world has ever seen through violence, murder and ethnic cleansing.

Putin fancies himself as that man.

Hello from Russia.

It is not near 1980s, when USSR where near point of total collapse. The only thing that is happening here, besides Wildberries users (both sellers and buyers) whining is I have to wait for an hour at gasoline station to refuel my car with petrol.

Circumspect? They tried to bomb ME with drone on 6 aug 2024 near Sudzha, when I was evacuating my mother from her house. They surely know that while Volkswagen Polo is a civilian car, I saw their recon drones for last two days near her house flying here and there.

Gladly, my car was in perfect condition and I was able to push to 140+kmh speed to evade that drone, which suddenly "reselected" it's target and bombed... Harvester! Such a military target! I was right near wheat field and saw it by my own eyes, between Dolgie Budy and Bushmeno.

And then you'll look at pictures and MOST casualties wearing military form.

Or even "better" - Ukraine tries to intercept drone/rocket, but Patriot, built 25+ years before, made a strike in a civilian house. Plenty of reports about Russia hitting civilian building with Iskander/Oreshnik/you_name_it, but photos images much less powerful weapon, like anti-airborne missiles.

Russia never officially has access to Starlink. Local laws requires satellites to transmit signals via stations on ground.

And yet how da hell UA hitting civilian buildings like houses and shops (not a big one like Lenta, Ashan or other, something small like SELPO)? They has access to Starlink, high-speed internet connection, they should clearly saw it isn't a military target!

> Putin is on the edge of being deposed. His 'elections' are due. He is desperate to be able to say 'NATO attacked us 'and we are winning in Ukraine'. But the banks have closed their doors and people cannot withdraw cash, there is no gasoline West of the Urals and not much diesel, 50% of the distilleries are out of action and nearly all Wildberries warehouses are gone.
>

Hey, stop being lying. This is just plain wrong propaganda:

1. Plenty of Diesel on every gasoline station, only petroleum (a.k.a. AI-92/AI-95) is a temporary problem.
2. Banks are working, was in Sberbank on Thursday because my MIR card expired. ATMs working fine and, as always, plenty of people near Sberbank ones withdrawing cash and paying mortrages/socials.
2.1. Also, we have MIR Pay now, so Google Pay/Apple Pay disablement isn't a problem at all.
2.2. Also, all banks implemented a way to pay via QR code.
3. Wildberries still delivering without problems, but I prefer OZON. Plenty of their (Wildberries) cars on roads, and big warehouse near my city is working fine.
4. And I can pay for everything everywhere with bank card/MIR Pay/QR code. In Ashan, Lenta or small SELPO shop in 150km from Ekaterinburg.

> Putin is hitting civilians because his armaments are mostly crap. The ones that get through - the supersonic ballistic missiles - are simply not very accurate, and the subsonic drones are mostly being shot down, So they are going to miss. Putin doesn't care. He is a war criminal already and a few more civilian lives are not going to change that.
>

Try to fact-check not only using UK/UA/USA sites. You probably will be very surprised.

And also, as always, truth is somewhere between.

And WHY this thread still in comp.os.linux.*? Seriously, move it to politics related group.
