That, or the "Ditch Witch" is restricted to burying only alongside the state/county roads, which can still leave the terminus of that fibre a good distance from the homes that are on the other ends of all the private roads that turn off the few state or county roads. And even running alongside the state/county owned roads often needs multitudes of permits and permissions from the state/county public works groups before you'd be allowed to bury the fibre.

And likely three different additional permits, five seperate inspections, and an environmental impact statement regarding impacts on the water in the ditch from Ditch Witching under the irrigation ditch to wire up the homes.

I'd have to count them but on one road close to me I think 8 power poles were down. I imagine one went and the rest became dominoes. A derecho is rare, but outages during less severe storms, both summer and winter, are common. The high tension distribution network often runs through rugged mountainous terrain and is susceptible to wild fire. An immense amount of power, phone, and cable is hung from poles but new runs are buried in most cases. Some of the new technology is interesting. When they put in a new run close to where I worked they used remote controlled microtunneling equipment. Many of the photos with articles about microtunneling show bores measured in feet. Perhaps this was nanotunneling since the head was less than one foot.

Yes. sometimes they can drag a mole through the soils and lay conduit. Or armoured cables. The 11KV is not ducted, just wrist sized armoured cables laid side by side in 3 phases. Red Yellow and Blue. Its gradually replacing the overheads. They dont install any overheads at all any more. Not for anything except maybe the last 50 yards across the street to the house That's one of the problems for rural areas. Policy forbids *new* overheads -- I was brought up to believe that you should never give offence if you can avoid it; the new culture tells us you should always take offence if you can. The city forbids a lot of things but once you cross the line into the county it's the Wild West. You can tell where the boundaries are around the 4th of July and New Years -- the fireworks stands are on the county side. The city is 32 out of 2618 square miles. One of the more remote parts of the county is talking about seceding.

Around here, the high-voltage lines run through the "foothills" (a 4000 foot / 1200m coastal mountain range) with long spans across canyons. Some sections on the front (coastal) side of the range, some through the wilderness on the back side. These are vulnerable. In high winds, the wires swing and may occasionally touch and spark and create severe transients that can blow out transformers along the line, and also start wildfires. When a wildfire burns near or under the line, the wires grow longer and arcing brings the line down. As I understand it, the entire supply to our 150,000+ urban area comes in across the mountain, the lines on the coastal side is only for local/regional distribution. This is not a reliable supply, so we need a spare/emergency generator in town, but nobody wants it in their neighborhood; they cry "toxic fumes". In this terrain, you can't bury lines along the existing route. We really need to run a set of new transmission lines along the existing traffic corridor along the coast, but they forgot to reserve space, even for a second railroad track, and now you would have to buy up a lot of expensive properties to create space for expanding the rail/road/power infrastructure. -- Lars Poulsen - an old geek in Santa Barbara, California

I live where there can be severe storms. Overhead lines get shredded, sometimes the poles too. Underground, well, that's a Major Investment by the telcoms. Cable net, it will get shredded too and they're even slower than the telcoms to fix shit. DID buy a decent over-air HDTV antenna - can get about 25 stations (most SHIT) but CAN get 'em. Was in a place where there were TWO hurricanes within about three weeks - a cat-2 and then a cat-3. Did HUGE long-lasting damage. The phone towers can/will go down, but they will be amongst the first things fixed. StarLink - been looking at it quite a bit - but in my case I'd have to build a custom frame/holder from some kind of bad-ass wood and solid asym 4-point mount to a concrete wall (envision a kinda shallow "wedge" setup). No 'perfect' solutions. Hmmmm ... remember people got roof repair started after hurricane #1 ... then it was all ripped away by hurricane #2 - and their insurance companies suddenly would not pay. GoogleEarth showed large quantities of "blue tarp" roofs there for YEARS :-) BUT, Laura Bush DID show up to distribute water bottles and MREs ! MREs ... you CAN eat 'em, but really don't WANNA :-) Mil MRE's are SUPER high SALT too - meant for 20 year old soldiers on aggressive maneuvers. If you are over 60 that much salt might put you in the hospital with kidney or heart failure. (some of the 3rd party stuff, "Mountain House" and such, IS better - MREs and/or dehydrated. Back then everything was GROWTH - now, at best, it's just "holding ground" - usually worse.

Just as the Covid thing was starting I scored kind of the last boxes of dehydrated food and decent MREs. Still have 'em, surely still "edible", Just In Case. MREs remain 'edible' for a long time, but the flavor gets kinda stale after a few years. Still better than the neighbors cat I suspect :-) Oh, avoid armadillo ... recent news sez they're loaded with leprosy. Lots of human xfer cases this year. There's something about the citters body temperature that makes them ideal incubators. Also probs with prion diseases in some herds of deer and moose - NO cure for those - not even sure super-well-done will destroy those mutant proteins. Actually, the whole food-supply chain, commercial and natural, seems kinda FUCKED the past five years. Never seen so many "urgent recall / Sure Death" warnings. The CryptoSHIT disease is the least of it. Fish may still be ok, but you kinda have to live on the ocean to take full advantage. Other odd bit this year - most of the horrible food diseases seem to be in VEGGIES, not meat. So much that I'm beginning to suspect something deliberate.

In my experience, boiled wheat can be left at room temperature for up to 24 hours before refrigerating it, but it starts to taste sour after a few days in the fridge if left at room temperature longer than about 24 hours before going in the fridge.
