For years my HP CololaserjetCP151518ni has soldiered on without complaint. It was connected to my Slackware 14.1 system through a router. But when my computer began to die Cups would not recognize the printer any more. I can ping the print at its assigned address: 192.168.1.114. I returned the router to its default configuration following the instructions in its manual.

The computer finally died and I used another, again with Slackware 14.1
Cups will still not recognize the printer.
The router is a Linksys WRT54G Version 7. It works fine in all other respects. I am using it now with the replcement commputer and my wife's laptop works without troubeol, but I am willing to replace it if necessary.

I doubt that the router is the problem. What started your problems
was the computer failure. That could have trashed the driver file.

I would expect that you need to refresh the printer driver.

Your printer isn't listed at OpenPrinting.org or on HP's
 Australian website.
It may be a model for
another country, e.g. with 115 volt supply.
 Contact HP.

I have an HP CP1515n, which is almost the same as a 1518n, same
"driver". Maybe he typed wrong.

This printer is capable of directly printing a postcript file without
using a driver, so that you can test connectivity this way.

CUPS does not find the printer on its own, because normally the firewall
blocks the packets needed for this to work. Instead, just tell CUPS the
IP of the printer.

Some more info might prove helpful.

Use `nmap' to identify what printer ports are open.

Check the printer's manual and post here what (network printing)
protocols the printer supports.

Post your cups and hplip versions.

Have you changed any router settings lately that might block
access to printer ports from your computer? Or, equivalently,
have you at some time in the past whitelisted your wife's computer and
not yours?

I downloaded a fresh hplip file. Still no joy then I went back to Cups and instead of going to "add printer" I went to "administration" and added it there.
Now it works!

Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

"Add Printer" should have asked for your root password. If it didn't,
there is something wrong in your system.

Relatedly, I've noticed that problem with "Find New Printers".
If you just click "Find New Printers", cups returns immediately,
without asking for root password, and just says "nothing found",
even when there's a printer there ready and waiting to be found.
Instead, if you first click "Add Printers", it asks for root
password. After giving it, I return to "Administration", click
"Find New Printers", and now it finds the ready-and-waiting printer.
That "Find New Printers" needs to be fixed so that it asks for
the root password when clicked.
