There was a time when "cutting edge" was necessary for some of us. 
Trying to make sure current hardware was working, or needing devfs 
(later udev) so device hot plugging would actually be viable (I still 
remember having systems with the "user" option on some fstabe entries 
for the CDrom and floppy.

Also, needing the latest GIMP, or the latest video codec libs to have 
any chance of being able to get certain every day jobs done...

These days I find I can be quite content with a 2 year old Long term 
release and not actually miss much... It's a good thing - it means linux 
has reached a certain maturity and "stuff works".
