Actually, KDE looks beautiful and runs pretty well, and I'd probably recommend it to naive users who just want something pretty as well as functional (and have the horsepower to support it). (I was recommending Ubuntu back in the Gnome 2 days, but I don't like the look and feel of Unity.) Myself, I prefer something lean and mean and have the knowledge to use it.
