It's a perfectly reasonably observation.

Google do have great stuff - but it's (mostly) free and when it's free, 
you're not the user, you're the product!


It's a balance. I use Google Calendar because:

1) It's bloody good - way better than Hoarde etc al.

2) I do not have much I call sensitive going in it.

But I run my own email and file servers because:

1) Both have sensitive data;

2) Email is handled *exactly* as well with exim+dovecot as Gmail can 
manage (because there's not shortage of email clients for any platform).

However, as what started this thread, the file servers do have a problem 
because there is (as yet) no network server/cleint app combo that is as 
nice on a semi connected device as Google Drive, Dropbox and several others.


Regarding the apps being able to do random stuff:

1) There is a strong case of "Caveat Userus" - User Beware. The system 
confirms wiht you if it is OK for an app to do X Y and Z - but you get 
sod all choice.

A better model would have been:

You get to tick the boxes you want. If it blows the app up, fair enough.

One example - I will not use the official Facebook app since it started 
asking to use the microphone - bloody cheeky bunch of bastards.


2) But *most* of the time, it works OK.

3) But occasionally, like with unofficial apps and SnapChat, the users 
got burned as their naked butts and danglies got slapped all over the 
Internet.


I tend to manage by staying in the 1+2 zone, but 3 IS quite worrying as 
it could be my kids. It's hard to stay on top of everything.
