I've had a few disks die - can't think of the brand offhand but its no 
longer with us and wasn't any of the big three. They excellent for a few 
years but then after a succession of them failed at about the time the 
guarantee ended I got smart and switched brands. The failure mode was 
always the same - over a day or two the drives got progressively slower 
until they became unusable.

In all cases the solution was a new drive and restore from the backup.

I have an additional USB drive thats always connected because a cron job 
backs up to it at 03:00. Its there for finger trouble recovery: it 
currently holds compressed backups from the last 15 days. Can't recall 
when I last pulled anything back from it though, because any file I think 
is at all valuable is put under CVS version control. Version controlled 
files are the ultimate protection against finger trouble and of course 
the version control repository gets backed up to offline storage along 
with everything else.
