In my experience, ghostscript/CUPS seems to process and print pages
one at a time, with a pause if one isn't ready by the time that the
last one printed. On another computer printing with a HP LaserJet
P3005, printing a very large postscript file with "lp" (or directly
from Libre Office, for one example) instead of "lp -o raw" introduces
noticable pauses and less reliability, whereas it prints consistantly
if the original postscript is sent to it without conversion. This is
with an instalation that doesn't suffer the issues with multi-minute
pauses when printing from Firefox, so I think it is normal operation.

The Postscript files for the raw printing were generated by
Ghostscript/CUPS using a "dummy" printer configured identically to
the P3005, but with output going to a file. So I know that the
problem is not less efficiantly constructed Postscript filling up
the printer's memory, but a delay caused by generating the
Postscript on the PC. The Postscript itself must be identical.

As noted, an update to CUPS or Ghostscript (I suspect the latter, but
have tried changing the versions of both) seemed to reduce the
efficiency of the process significantly. I believe the system has
moved to using PDF internally instead of Postscript, but I remember
looking into this and finding that my problem was still present with
versions using Postscript.

If the poscript contains lots of images, sending it directly to the
printer can still result in pauses (though I'm not sure if they would
be eliminated by using the normal printing process). My point is that
a large file that prints using "lp -o raw" without pauses, can have
pauses introduced when using "lp", which indicates that the
bottleneck is at the PC rather than the printer.
