I had Mint/LXDE running on a laptop a while ago when I was trying
various distros.  It was OK, although I don't recall any "must have"
features.  Currently I'm running Xfce under Debian.  It does everything
I want, it's lean and mean, handles dual monitors smoothly, and I can
set up panels the way I want them.

I tried KDE only briefly - it feels way too bloated to me.  Even when
I run a KDE app under a leaner window manager it leaves all sorts of
processes running in the background that spit out random messages in
my console window.  I've learned to avoid KDE apps entirely.
