If you've got a decent-size USB stick then you might not even need a CD for 
trying things out.

Go look for Unetbootin on SourceForge (Google will help you find it), 
download the Mint 13 XFCE 32-bit ISO[*]. Use Unetbootin to write it to the 
USB stick and then reboot off that. Once you've worked out how to do it, you 
can easily try other Linux variants if you so wish, without amassing a 
collection of CDs and DVDs. You can experiment with KDE and Gnome editions, 
but they normally exercise the graphics a bit harder and aren't as good as 
XFCE or LXDE. I prefer LXDE to XFCE, but it's not available as a Live CD 
image (although is relatively trivial to add once you're up and running).
