But the main reason is IMO that Linux desktop has a low market share. Not
commercially interesting enough for the bad guys to create viruses.

Windows knows user accounts since NT IIRC, so mid 90s. With Windows 2000
also the home user could use non-admin account. But almost no one does,
because when you install it you usually don't "want" it. You would have
to check an additional check box and think about 2 passwords now. That is
not "user friendly" so MS decided to not "enforce" that. While Linux and
probably every other OS wants the user to create a user (and may be a
root) account.
