They were lucky it was just an rs232 port that got fried, > and not the users. They wouldn't. I saw the same thing happen between a computer and a printer, on the parallel printer port. The ground connection on the mains socket was faulty or disconnected. The case was floating at half mains voltage, that is, 110 here. I saw the spark, so I quickly found the problem. Yet touching the metal on the case wouldn't kill anybody, because the current flowing was very very small.
