As said my ex BIL's job was selling them off in hundreds

He would be tasked to go into a corporate data centre with hundreds of 
Windows NT departmental servers, and put the lot on *virtual* machines 
on a few  blade servers.

The electricity and aircon savings alone were phenomenal.

Then the servers were de-disked and sold on

Sometimes they wanted all new desktops for 500 users as well, if the 
maintenance suppliers were not interested in e,g. supporting win XP any more

De-disk and flog

Remember the good corporate mindset is not the end user mindset.
They want business specific applications at the lowest per desk, per 
annum cost, and they don't want an IT department they cant fire.

Everything is outsourced

One customer I visited had a 21 year old IBM 360 running custom COBOL 
code that they had had written 20 years and and it still ran fine, bit 
they couldn't get anyone to support the hardware, so they got some sort 
of AIX machine that was essentially a 486 PC that would still run their 
code as well as do a lot more.

A bit smaller than the chest-freezer sized 360

I know someone with a VAX in his home office. Think it runs VMS
