Wallyworld is having an Xmas sale and has a model of the HP2000
laptop on sale, a very limited supply of celeron equipt models.
Probably a phase out. Anyway, I convinced 'em to sell me an AMD
version. Duocore, 320g HDD, 15.6" screen, etc. BUT! ....looking at
the reviews on Amazon shows an almost 20% 1-star rating, most saying
this line, and HP in general, is now dogcrap, stay away! ????

Really that bad? And are they linux friendly? I have no intention of
running W8, but if HP has gone down the toity, never mind.

HP is certainly not the company it used to be...
but since the machine came with Win8 that might be the reason for the
bad rating.

HP can never be the company it used to be. It was a test equipment and
then high end calculator business, then later got into computers,
eventually the company split. The computer business keeps the HP name,
but the test equipment and the like that were the cornerstone of the
business are no longer part of the business. HP basically spun off the
consumer computer division, and gave the name away with it.

Well, thanks for the brief history lesson, Michael, but I knew all
that, having once worked in the heart of Silly Vlly. What I wanted
was some insight to whether or not their products (from the computer
side) are worth a damn, anymore. The picture I get from Amazon reviews
is one of a company now selling total junk and providing little, if
any, real support. Apparently, that's the case. I called WW and told
'em to cancel the hold.

I consider support to be a prime factor in the purchase of any product
and lack of same will torpedo a purchase in a heartbeat. I figure if
the company is willing to stand behind their product, it's bound to be
a good product. If not, it's probably junk. This isn't always the
case, but it's pretty good measuring stick.

Thanks to all who replied.

From what I have seen, HP's consumer line is junk, but they have some decent
products in their business line.

As I suspected. This laptop is definitely in the lower consumer end
of their line. I opted out.

Wise decision. :-)

Basically, if something is at Walmart, it's junk constructed
from the lowest bottom-of-the-barrel parts to cut costs (and
reliability).

Total nonsense.

I'm no fan of WallyWorld, but yer claim is absurd. I now live in a
remote area or the CO Rockies. I hafta shop at WW if I want some
things. Only game in town. I've bought 2 flat panel TVs (Vizio) and
one FP computer monitor (Acer). They both work flawlessly. The wool
socks I purchased there are US made and 80% wool. Excellent. The gun
range bag I bought for peanuts is 10 yrs old and going strong. The two
pairs of fleece pants and micro fiber comforters I bought are
awesome. Warm as Hell! Bought a Chinese made ranch jacket, those
rust red things with the corduroy collar. Twenty bucks and warmer
than my $80 Carhartt equivelent. Not everything WW sells is junk.
Jes gotta be smarter than the item yer buying. ;)

Wrongo.

Plus the Walmarts here in Silicon Valley require one to carry
a gun to the store from one's car in the parking lot given the
locations in high crime areas. Not worth shopping for junk and
not worth risking one's life.

Only game in town, for sure. I used to live in Gunnison, Colo. When
the Made-In-China store came to town, they killed two drugstores, an
independent shoe store, an independent children's store, the Sears and
Montgomery Ward catalog stores, the J.C.Penny store, and several more I
forget at this time. Many decent, long term families lost their
livelihoods. The sense of community was greatly diminished.

I have made it my life's goal to never darken the threshold of a
Communist Chinese Outlet store.

FWIW: My company provided me with a Lenovo lap top and I found it to be
quite good.

That's true for Dell (and very likely others) too.

For example, a Dell Inspiron is consumer-class but a Dell Latitude is
business-class and there's a big difference in quality and product
longevity. My three Dell Latitude C610 circa 2002 are still running
perfectly today as is my Dell Latitude D600 circa 2004.

HP's consumer-class products are basically junk and generally have
flaky motherboards plagued with MLCC (multi-layer ceramic capacitor)
problems. Their business product line is a world-apart which is why
I have two HP dc5850 and HP dc7900 small-form-factor desktops running
CentOS, OpenIndiana (Solaris 11), and FreeBSD.

Yep, back in the vacuum days (and beyond) they were top of the line.
I still have one of these in my workshop:
http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/hewlett_pa_rack_mount_oscilloscope_1.html
(not in use)

One of my friends from HS ...the school genius worked for HP writing
printer drivers. They released him just before he turned 60 and though
with his talents had no trouble getting employment elsewhere...it sure
left him quite bitter.

He told me that HP used to make equipment that no one else could
build...and now they make equipment no one else would bother to build.
