#2527 — Synaptics touchpad USB ID 06CB:2970 driver?

Is the Synaptics touchpad (clickpad) with USB ID 06CB:2970 supported
by any currently distributed driver?

The kernel sees the device (dmesg), lsusb sees it  but its associated
event never emits anything (cat /dev/input/eventn).

So the touchpad doesn't work at all.

There is a synaptics_usb.{c,ko} module but its source references only
low-number product IDs for vendor ID 06CB.

dmesg reports:

   usb 3-1.3: New USB device found, idVendor=06cb,  idProduct=2970
   usb 3-1.3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
   usb 3-1.3: Product:
   usb 3-1.3: Manufacturer:

No Product: or Manufacturer: because (I assume) this product (2970)
isn't listed in /usr/share/hwdata/usb.ids

   hid-multitouch 0003:06CB:2970.0002: input,hiddev0,hidraw1: USB HID 
   v1.11 Mouse [   ] on usb-0000:00:12.0-1.3/input0

which hints that the hid-multitouch.ko module is running the touchpad
but modinfo doesn't show an alias for any 06CB devices.

The manual for this laptop (details infra) mentions Fn-F7 key combo
that is supposed to turn the touchpad on and off. This has no effect
on the touchpad or on /dev/input/eventn.

Any pointers welcome:

    + to a driver,

    + to initializing the touchpad,

    + to enable the Fn-F7 function of address this Fn function from Linux,

    + to another way to get the touchpad working.

(Workaround: An external USB mouse works without any special
 incantations. Clunky but at least I'm not stuck.)

For the record, this is apparently a "Microsoft Precision TouchPad".
A driver developer and two users have reported to me that the 3.15 and
3.16 kernels support at least basic functionality of this device.

Haven't upgraded my own kernel yet but it sounds promising.

A much newer kernel, in the 4.x range, may support it.  I won't know
until I upgrade to Slackware 14.2. I use a USB mouse and just forget
about the pad.

Why? I'm happily running a 14.1 system with kernel 4.8.3 currently
because I haven't gotten around to building 4.8.6 yet. 4.8 kernels
support something called "rmi4" which is the latest synaptics protocol
definition from the little I've read about it.

Because it's easy if a bit if a bother.  And I've had no convincing
word from any of my own previous requests for help/wisdom on the
subject that support had appeared in the later kernels.  I did compile
the 3.16.1 kernel with no useful results for the clickpad.

Have you used or seen used a Synaptics 2970 clickpad with it?  How
does the clickpad (that AFAICT tilts two ways) emulate a 3-button
mouse?  I suspect that it will be more annoyance than it's worth.
But thanks for the info.  That may be what the OP needs to know.

becoming unpopular and would disappear.  Everything else works --
after a lot of dicking around -- as expected.

I buy my laptops at a local used laptop store.  They sell refurbished
IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads for much less than you'd pay if you were looking
for the latest and greatest.  I paid $350 for the T410 I'm typing this
on; it has an i5 processor, 4GB RAM and a 250GB hard drive - and a DVD
drive.  This shop is about the only place I can find laptops with real
professional-grade keyboards, something which is very important to me.

There's a similar shop near me, called GrabaLaptop.

I bought a T400 for my wife in March for £89.
I was so impressed (and envious) that I got another for me last month,
and this one was only £79.
Your T410 is £120 - or $150 at today's exchange rate.

I've been hoping that the next release of Slackware would have a
kernel/driver that supported it.  Perhaps not.

I have compiled a 3.16.1 kernel.  That *does* respond to the pad but
only erratically.  It remains unusable.  Still using an external
mouse.  

The Acer E17 laptop is fine in every other respect. (Oh, except trying
to get aumix to work right, but I have some suggestions from others to
work with when I get to it.)
