Is the Synaptics touchpad (clickpad) with USB ID 06CB:2970 supported
by any currently distributed driver?

The kernel sees the device (dmesg), lsusb sees it  but its associated
event never emits anything (cat /dev/input/eventn).

So the touchpad doesn't work at all.

There is a synaptics_usb.{c,ko} module but its source references only
low-number product IDs for vendor ID 06CB.

dmesg reports:

   usb 3-1.3: New USB device found, idVendor=06cb,  idProduct=2970
   usb 3-1.3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
   usb 3-1.3: Product:
   usb 3-1.3: Manufacturer:

No Product: or Manufacturer: because (I assume) this product (2970)
isn't listed in /usr/share/hwdata/usb.ids

   hid-multitouch 0003:06CB:2970.0002: input,hiddev0,hidraw1: USB HID 
   v1.11 Mouse [   ] on usb-0000:00:12.0-1.3/input0

which hints that the hid-multitouch.ko module is running the touchpad
but modinfo doesn't show an alias for any 06CB devices.

The manual for this laptop (details infra) mentions Fn-F7 key combo
that is supposed to turn the touchpad on and off. This has no effect
on the touchpad or on /dev/input/eventn.

Any pointers welcome:

    + to a driver,

    + to initializing the touchpad,

    + to enable the Fn-F7 function of address this Fn function from Linux,

    + to another way to get the touchpad working.

(Workaround: An external USB mouse works without any special
 incantations. Clunky but at least I'm not stuck.)
