#1311 — free software + OpenCL: supported hardware?

	Does anyone have any experience with free software-only OpenCL
	on AMD Radeon-based boards?  I'm primarily interested in using
	it along with Debian GNU/Linux Wheezy, but I'd appreciate any
	comments on how well it works in general.

	I'm looking forward to acquire one of the following boards (both
	are fan-less, which is a pro, but not a crucial one):

	• Sapphire AMD Radeon HD6450 1024MB 64bit DDR3 [11190-02-XX];

	• PCI-E Asus AMD Radeon HD6670 1024MB 128bit DDR3 [EAH6670 DC
	  SL/DI/1GD3].

	As per [1, 2], both should be supported by free software.

I would steer well clear anything that has ATI/AMD graphics, these will 
cause grief, the drivers are crap and so is the hardware on linux.

	Is there an alternative for OpenCL?  I'm not that interested in
	"graphics" per se, BTW.

	(So far, my ATI Radeon-based card has worked pretty much
	perfectly for me via the "vesa" X.Org driver.)

In my experience the free drivers for ATI cards are far superior to
the free drivers for Nvidia cards (reportedly Nouveau is getting
there, but that's too recent for my experience).

I have used Radeon Cards on Linux on my PC since the Radeon 9600,
which I bought almost ten years ago (then 9250, X800, X1650, 4670 and
now 5770).  No grief for me, but for some chips 3D acceleration was
not available on the Debian track I used (mostly stable, sometimes
testing) when I bought the card.

As for grief, a collegue got a PowerBook in 2004, which had an Nvidia
chip.  He never could get that Laptop to display on an external screen
with Linux.  In contrast, I got an iBook (with a Mobile Radeon 9200)
at about the same time, and although it was quite a bit of work, I got
it to display on an external screen.

Another example, we got Zotac Ion-based X-Terminals a few years ago,
which have Nvidia graphics.  The nv driver does not work for
2560x1600, so we had to go for the proprietary nvidia driver.

	We've tested the following board based on the same chip today,
	marked as: Asus AMD Radeon HD6450 1024MB 64bit DDR3 [EAH6450
	SILENT/DI/1GD3(LP)].

	While I haven't tried OpenCL just yet (may take a couple of
	weeks to get to that, unfortunately), the basic graphics worked
	quite well with the ‘radeon’ X.Org driver currently in Debian
	Wheezy.  On the other hand, 3D (we've tried glxgears(1)) seemed
	a bit flacky.

	As per the sensors(1) output, the chip easily heats up to 75 °C,
	which is somewhat worse than I've expected (though I'm not that
	familiar with modern GPU's.)

Once you get to test OpenGL performance it would be nice if you could add
the results to http://www.free3d.org/
