You point to a Flash based site with a horrid entry page as "cutting edge." Oh my. And the design is not great. And it is SLOW. Horridly slow. Hint, any time you need to have a "skip" button just to get to a site it is poorly designed. And all that movement and sound and... good grief that site is one I would use as an example of what NOT to do! My site is not even relevant to COLA... but you brought up a site to discuss. And it is BAD. Very, very bad. -- * OS X / Linux: What is a file? <http://youtu.be/_dMbXGLW9PI> * Mint MATE Trash, Panel, Menu: <http://youtu.be/C0y74FIf7uE> * Mint KDE working with folders: <http://youtu.be/7C9nvniOoE0> * Mint KDE creating files: <http://youtu.be/N7-fZJaJUv8> * Mint KDE help: <http://youtu.be/3ikizUd3sa8> * Mint KDE general navigation: <http://youtu.be/t9y14yZtQuI> * Mint KDE bugs or Easter eggs? <http://youtu.be/CU-whJQvtfA> * Easy on OS X / Hard on Linux: <http://youtu.be/D3BPWANQoIk> * OS / Word Processor Comparison: <http://youtu.be/w6Qcl-w7s5c>

One of which is Samsung vs. Apple. I say Samsung is the far better company. Chrisv feels higher profits are better. I understand the point of view, but I will always prefer a well diversified company to a one-trick pony company. There were other disagreements as well, I don't remember them off hand. Where I come from everyone pretty much disagrees and argues. But in COLA the trolls take advantage of it. No Linux user I've ever known was in agreement with another. We've always had our own beliefs. Just mention systemd and see for yourself. We also poke fun at ourselves. Every year there is a "Why Linux Sux" conference and we trash talk Linux there. I bet most of you don't know that but it's true. I don't raise issues here because trolls will just spin it all day. But in a normal setting we don't talk about the good only. We talk about everything and just know it is work in progress. You can look up just about anything version wise in Linux and then look again in a month. It will have evolved a little. How many people in here used to not use Network Manager vs how many rely on it now? I wrote my own OpenVPN script, complete with a menu of end points which generates an ovpn conf file on the fly for the use of that one connection. I do it because it was honestly easier to write that then it was to try and configure Network Manager for anything beyond one end point. But there exists these trolls and they want to paint things in a black and white way. Oh look, someone found a post on a help forum asking for help. Who'd have thought. They put on their chicken little hat and cry the sky is falling, no seriously, the SKY IS FALLING!! Look!! Someone posted a help topic. It's retarded. Then that same person says, all Linux advocates are liars. Now, I'm supposed to consider this is a normal guy with a normal job? How the hell am I supposed to see that person as anything other than a twisted moron troll? If Chrisv or anyone else for that matter disagrees with me, I really couldn't care less. What someone does with that disagreement is another matter. Perhaps my closest usenet friend HATES systemd so much he may well switch to FreeBSD. I don't hate systemd at all. Not even slightly. Is it changing Linux? Yes. And as I have said I like UNIX. And UNIX doesn't have a systemd. It has init. But if you ask me straight up, which is easier to modify, init or systemd. I'll have to opine systemd. And I'd further opine that you don't even have to know shell to do it. Is systemd perfect? No. init has been around for decades. It's stable. systemd needs work. So until all the kinks are worked out, people will poke it and call out every problem it has. So do we as Linux users dump Linux over this? Some will. I won't. It would be easy. I already use FreeBSD for all kinds of things, the top two being my firewall and my NAS and I have no intention of changing my mind on either one of those. And that's not a knock on Linux. On my VPS, I just use IPTables. That's Linux and it's a firewall. Now to someone who wants to paint a black and white issue, they can. They can say, why not stick with one or the other? I don't think that way at all. IP Tables is just there already. I'll just use it on a VPS because, why not? If another Linux user disagrees with me it should not be taken as anything more than dark blue is my favorite color and ymmv. You like what you like. Lastly, I'm here because I'm actually a Linux user. I'm also on a FreeBSD mailing list and I listen to FreeBSD podcasts. I am a member of the FreeBSD foundation. I'm a member of the Document Foundation and the Free Software Foundation among others. My favorite license is the GPL v2. You like Solaris if I'm not mistaken. I like Solaris as well. If it is real UNIX, not that iCrap, I'll like it. I'll feel right at home on it. Linux is simply what I like most. It's not a black and white issue. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

So it was > easier to just download free Solaris and just copy over my stuff to it. I have Open Solaris. And if we didn't talk about this in the past already I had two SparcStaions. One was a SuperSparc and the other was a Sparc clone, I forget the name. And I very much wanted the Ultra Sparc 1 which is what I got my formal training on in 98/99. I owned my own 30 drive Sun drawer type of array. I believe the model 102. I think I actually dug up the receipts and posted them here or on another group because it was funny that I just found them by chance along with a stack of old certifications I thought I lost. So I started on Solaris 2.5. I'd say maybe a year ago I grabbed Open Solaris and started running that. My last memory of Solaris was with CDE. Now it's got Gnome. Times they do change. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny
