Wouldn't want anything else. > Cut the cord and move on. You are projecting your aversion for GNU/Linux onto other people. Don't do that. Just because you hate it or can't get it to work or whatever doesn't mean that the rest of us here share that opinion. Judging by the sheer number of individual poster names/pseudonyms in the great many GNU/Linux-related newsgroups I reside, I'm apparently not the only one who have an opinion different from yours. And the number of GNU/Linux newsgroups I'm subscribed to is even only a very small subset of the many that exist on news.eternal-september.org alone. (Note: Many groups are language-specific or locale-specific, and I'm not subscribed to any of those, except for one group which officially centers around my own country, Belgium, albeit that in practice it rather centers around people who speak Dutch - Belgium has three official languages - and as such, the group's population includes GNU/Linux users from the Netherlands as well.) As always when it comes to GNU/Linux, dweller of the Mariana waters, your vision is inaccurate. You and your Microsoft fanboy brethren constantly appeal onto (quite terribly) skewed statistics with regard to GNU/Linux usage - with evidence of the skew of these statistics readily available in other statistics, namely those of the computers that are currently being sold with GNU/Linux pre-installed. In addition, it has also already been explained to you in abundance - both by myself and by others - that the GNU/Linux operating system is one thing, while the way it is being offered - i.e. via a very fragmented landscape of distributions, of which some don't have commercial intents while others do - in a world where Microsoft Inc. had already been dominating the market through monopolistic tactics, and Apple Computer is no better than they are. The only reasons why Apple isn't as widespread are (a) that Apple's hardware is still in part proprietary amidst a huge offer of standardized x86 hardware from other vendors, (b) that Apple's hardware is comparatively expensive, and (c) that Apple profiles its hardware as being a work of art, thereby appealing unto an elitist buyer audience. And then there's the distinction between a home desktop machine and the corporate desktop. Corporate desktop users are not in a position to choose what operating system they want on their machines. Said decision is made higher up in the food chain, and Pointy Haired Bosses (TM) prefer dealing with an IT partner which has a corporate name. But that said, even there Microsoft is losing ground. Many government departments around the globe and many corporations are already ditching Microsoft because of licensing issues - which basically boils down to that they prefer the Freedom of FLOSS over the restrictions of proprietary software - and related to that, the total cost of ownership, and are adopting GNU/Linux instead. So please, before embarking on Yet Another Anti-GNU/Linux Rant, get your facts right. GNU/Linux itself is an operating system, not a commercial initiative. If you have any issues with this or that distribution vendor, then that *is* a matter pertaining to this or that distribution vendor, but then that has nothing to do with the quality or tenet of the GNU/Linux operating system. And that tenet is Freedom. The Freedom to choose whether you want to use it or not, and /how/ you will be using it. And that's all that matters to us. We like it, and we use it. You don't like it? Fine, then don't use it. That is a Freedom we grant to you as well. Who cares about how many people are using it or how many are not using it? At least, we know that we've got a time-proven, secure, stable, versatile, integrated, portable, standards-compliant and powerful operating system on our machines. I guess that answers the question in the subject line for this thread, "Does anyone even care?" Only the Microsoft fanboys seem to care. And that posits a very interesting new question, doesn't it? Namely the question as to *why* Microsoft's fanboys care so much about GNU/Linux's "market share". After all, if Microsoft's software were so good and its position "in the market" so strong, then why should *you* care about GNU/Linux? Either use it or leave it for what it is. The choice is yours. Nobody here is forcing you or shoving an expensive license down your throat that you did not ask for. Be grateful that you _have_ that choice, and if you decide to use GNU/Linux, then be grateful also for the hard work all those FLOSS developers have put in, without that they're asking you for an arm and a leg, not to mention your soul. I bid you a good day, Sir. -- *Aragorn* (registered GNU/Linux user #223157)

Because it's being pushed down everyone's throat with the acquisition of
most new home and office desktop PCs. This is already known to
everyone. Big deal.
My old computer blew up a while ago. I bought a new PC two weeks ago,
from a shop that had a specific PC model on offer as an Easter
promotion campaign. They had to assemble one specifically for me - but
with all the standard components - because all the pre-built ones had
Windows installed on them and the serial numbers et al had already been
entered and the stickers applied.
Mine has the exact same specs and the exact same hardware, but it was
some 100 Euro cheaper as I didn't have to buy the Windows license.
I've had them put in the hard disk from the computer that had died
(alongside of the new and still blank hard disk the machine came
equipped with by default), and it booted up in my old GNU/Linux system.
Works like a charm. So what's the problem?
> Stop deluding yourself.
I'm not deluding myself at anything. GNU/Linux works for me, and for
millions of other people. Why should I give a hoot about your
so-beloved toy operating system?

More like 5 percent. And if you look at this Wikipedia page here...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_adoption
... it says, among other things, the following...
<quote>
"Caitlyn Martin, researching retail market numbers in the
summer of 2010 also concluded that the traditional numbers
mentioned for Linux desktop adoption were far too low:
"It seems like almost every day someone in the tech
press or someone commenting in a technical forum will
claim that Linux adoption on the desktop (including
laptops) is insignificant. The number that is thrown
around is 1%. These claims are even repeated by some
who advocate for Linux adoption. Both the idea that
Linux market share on the desktop is insignificant
and the 1% figure are simply false and have been for
many years... Where does the 1% number come from?
There are two sources: very old data and web counters.
The problem with using web counters to try and
ascertain market share is that they generally only
include websites that have paid to be counted. That
pretty much guarantees that Windows will be
overcounted."
-- Caitlyn Martin"
</quote>
... and this...:
<quote>
"I don't believe that the desktop Linux market share is barely
1%. I think it is a lot higher. I have no good data to share;
I base my assessment on experience and knowing the industry.
There is something else that is even more persuasive, and
that is how Microsoft behaves. If Linux is so insignificant,
why do they pay so much attention to it?
-- Carla Schroder, Linux Today"
</quote>
... and this...:
<quote>
"Gartner claimed that Linux-powered personal computers
accounted for 4% of unit sales in 2008."
</quote>
This particular Wikipedia page also further addresses some of the things
I've said in my previous reply to you (and which GNU/Linux advocates
have been trying to convey to you and your Wintendo-fan friends for
years already).
It also says this...:
<quote>
"TechRepublic writer Jack Wallen expands on this barrier, saying
in August 2008:
"Why would anyone choose Windows over Linux?... In my
seriously biased opinion, I think this question is
answered with a simple conspiracy theory: Microsoft is
doing everything it can to keep the public blind to
Linux. Think about it? Remember the whole Wintel
conspiracy where MS and Intel played off of each other
to continue their strangle-hold monopoly in the PC
industry? That era played a huge part in the blinding
of consumers. Top that with the business practices MS
forces upon big box shops to insure (sic) their
operating system is sold on nearly every PC sold and
you can see that conspiracy is more of a reality than
one might think.""
</quote>
... As well as this...:
<quote>
"Linux's credibility has also been under attack at times, but
as Ron Miller of LinuxPlanet points out:
"...the fact that Linux is being criticized is probably a
good thing.
First of all, it shows that Linux is making headway in
the enterprise and beginning to have an impact on
competitors and they are reacting to that. Secondly,
it's healthy to take a long look at any solution and
analyze its strengths and weaknesses and the economic
ramifications of one choice over another.
Ultimately, consumers and decision makers need to look
carefully at the data including the sources of the data
and the criticism and decide if Linux is the right
decision, but as more people choose Linux and it finds
its place in the market, it is bound to wear a target.
That's simply the price you pay for success in the
marketplace.""
</quote>
And finally, *this* little gem, from the horse's mouth...:
<quote>
"In January 2001, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates explained the
attraction of adopting Linux in an internal memo that was
released in the Comes vs Microsoft case. He said:
"Our most potent Operating System competitor is Linux
and the phenomena around Open Source and free software.
The same phenomena fuels competitors to all of our
products. The ease of picking up Linux to learn it or
to modify some piece of it is very attractive. The
academic community, start up companies, foreign
governments and many other constituencies are putting
their best work into Linux.""
</quote>
Note the words "The ease of picking up Linux [...] is very attractive".
> Your point?
... *My* point is that *you* don't *have* a point.
> Snip----More pipe dreams.....
Please carefully quote any of what I have said in my reply to you which
would have been a dream of any sorts, let alone a pipe dream. Here's a
hint: you can't, because I didn't write any of such stuff. The Usenet
archives of Google are my witness.
Don't make up shit about people - shit which you can't even prove
because it *is* shit - just to win your debate. It makes you a sore
loser and a terrible advocate for your cause - whatever your cause is,
because as GNU/Linux and FLOSS are all about Freedom and Choice, I
don't see why any of this market share nonsense would be any of your
concern. Unless you're being paid by Microsoft to make up this
nonsense, of course.
It's either that, or you are suffering from severe psychosis. I'll
leave it up to you to come out of the closet about either (or both) of
those two scenarios. But let's just say that after all of these years
of seeing you post the same old drivel, I think I have a pretty good
idea on what your motivation is. But unlike you, I don't generally
insult or humiliate people, so I'll keep that opinion to myself.
Have a nice day.

This is already known to > everyone. Big deal. You cant be this stupid can you? Its not "pushed" anywhere. It's sold. And people buy it. Its what they are used to. The netbook market proved this beyond any doubt. retailers stocks what people want. If people really really WANT something else there is nothing stopping them moving to Linux. Nothing. So long as they are willing to do the work and fix the issues that WILL arise. For some this is an exciting challenge, for others a hurdle too far that leads to loss of efficiency in the workplace : the amount of failed Linux migrations proves that. If you are too stupid or too unwilling to understand why desktop Linux is generally rejected by the home and corporate desktop user then you are a liability to the Linux and FOSS way. Why? Because you can not and will not do anything to improve it. Only by understanding and accepting the issues will they get fixed. Whining like a big bearded cellar dweller is no way to go through life son : pull up your pants, take a deep breath and address the issues. Man up and contribute. Stop whining like a stuck pig. For techies who dont play modern PC games and dont need good phone sync etc then Linux is great : I use it for a web server, rdbms, exim4 mail server as well as on my development desktop (pretty much emacs based) and various laptops and my quite new Asus netbook. But I use Debian. Why? I know it and its stable enough. I wouldnt touch that heap of shit Ubuntu in a million years now. Why? The user base is a bunch of know nothing fanboys. It is getting "Patched" willy nilly which leads to problems later with official upgrades. Its released with no real QA regardless of state. its a mess. That and they are tardy feeding things back upstream IMO. ie they take but dont give back.

Indeed. When PC's are build-to-order like what Dell does, there's no good reason for them to not offer that option. Of course, Windows advocates like "Hadron" have argued that every PC needs to have Windows put on it, lest there be "confusion" and the customer not get what they expect. The trolling idiots ignore, of course, that the selection of a "no OS" option could be made to pop a very "loud" warning that the PC will then be non-functional until the customer obtains and installs an OS, such as Windows or Linux.

Earlier memos described that it was "untenable" that a key Microsoft partner was promoting Linux. Kuney revealed that Dell disbanded its Linux business unit in early 2001. Dell quietly pulled Linux from its desktop PCs in the summer of 2001, IDG's Ashlee Vance discovered subsequently, six months after we heard Michael Dell declare his love of Linux on the desktop the previous winter. Compaq was also mentioned in other memos, with Microsoft taking the line that OEMs should "meet demand but not help create demand" for Linux. <end> Now although that came to light in 2002, it makes you wonder if M$ is still up to the same anti-linux thuggery, & why Dell hides its Linux computers out of sight off the main pages.. -- "!sgub evah t'nseod CP sihT ?sgub naem ayaddahW" "Microsoft has vast resources, literally billions of dollars in cash, or liquid assets reserves. Microsoft is an incredibly successful empire built on the premise of market dominance with low-quality goods." -- Former White House adviser Richard A. Clarke --

Why can't retailers just ask their customers what OS they want, if any, at the point of sale? It's just a question. How hard can it be to just ask a question? Why wouldn't any retailer want to ask it? How are they supposed to know what their customers want unless they ask? Has that question /ever/ been asked at the point of sale, in fact? Nobody's ever asked /me/ that question in any shop I've ever bought a PC, online or otherwise. Doesn't anybody else find that ... odd? And then, even odder, some retailers then claim the reason they don't offer anything but PCs bundled with Windows, is because "nobody demands" anything else ... but how do they know, if they never ask? Isn't that, you know - /lying/? But why would they lie? Why would any retailer deliberately lose sales by pretending there's "no demand" for something when they can't possibly know that's true, because they never ask? It's almost as though there's some other, more sinister reason. Hmm. Then to compound the issue Microsoft pays these companies to pretend they "Recommend Windows" - another lie. They don't "Recommend Windows" at /all/, they're /paid/ to /advertise/ Windows, It's a very important difference, especially when it comes to determining why they're so reluctant to sell anything else. It'd be like buying a loaf of bread at the grocer's, and being forced to take a "bundled" jar of raspberry jam, despite the fact that you prefer strawberry, or none at all ... every single time, with every brand of bread, in every single grocery shop on planet Earth, without option ... anywhere, ever. That's not normal, putting it mildly. If that actually happened, in fact if it happened with /any/ other product except Windows, there'd be a public outcry, and the people involved in that conspiracy would be prosecuted. So why isn't the government doing something about Microsoft, and why aren't PC retailers listening to their customers? -- K. | "Linux hackers are on a mission http://slated.org | from God" ~ The Vatican Fedora 8 (Werewolf) on šky | kernel 2.6.31.5, up 78 days | http://tinyurl.com/linuxmission

Because they don't want to have to go through all the trouble of trying to support a lame desktop OS like Linux. They don't want their phone ringing off the hook when Jayne tries to sync her PDA, update her TomTom, plan a trip to load into her GPS, try to use the iTunes store, send documents that nobody can read, can't connect to the net and set up her router, cable modem and so forth because the included CD won't run under Linux....... Doesn't anybody else find that ... odd? The last computer I bought from a big electrical store, the sales person sat me down in a chair and said "Well, you'll want anti-virus installed" I said no. You should have seen the look! "You really *need* anti-virus", he said to me.... "No I don't.. I'm wiping windows and installing Linux"... I got a blank and rather a resentful stare. There's obviously more commission for selling "extra" software like MSO and AV. It makes me wonder why these "necessary" items aren't installed from the start, especially if they're needed for the normal and safe operation of the machine. > And then, even odder, some retailers then claim the reason they don't > offer anything but PCs bundled with Windows, is because "nobody demands" > anything else ... but how do they know, if they never ask? It's > almost as though there's some other, more sinister reason. Hmm. There's no "kickbacks" with Linux. All that crapware the OEM installs on the machine pays for windows and more. Linux actually *costs* them money to install. It's really insane.OEMS get money to allow shitware manufacturers to install their shitware on the new machines. Customers then have to pay to remove all this shit that is installed. All this simply to pay for the licence to run windows on the machine. If Linux were installed there would be none of this rubbish. The seller could even throw in a few hours of tuition (added to the price of course) to equip the purchaser with the skill necessary to get them started on the road to successful computing with Linux... no waste, no bullshit. > Then to compound the issue Microsoft pays these companies to pretend > they "Recommend Windows" - another lie. They get *paid* to be reluctant to sell anything else. Why aren't the authorities stepping on this racket? Because Microsoft executives actually come to our country and have *private* meetings with our own government!!!!!!! What a fucking disgusting scam. > It'd be like buying a loaf of bread at the grocer's, and being forced to > take a "bundled" jar of raspberry jam, despite the fact that you prefer > strawberry, or none at all ... every single time, with every brand of > bread, in every single grocery shop on planet Earth, without option ... > anywhere, ever. > > That's not normal, putting it mildly. What's wrong with you? There's no demand for strawberry jam "bundled" with your bread. All the customers are happy with their rasberry jam bundled with their bread purchase... they're getting something for nothing aren't they... ;-) > If that actually happened, in fact if it happened with /any/ other > product except Windows, there'd be a public outcry, and the people > involved in that conspiracy would be prosecuted. > So why isn't the government doing something about Microsoft, and why > aren't PC retailers listening to their customers? Looks like you cheap, big mouth "advocates" need to start OEMs. What's stopping you? > If Linux were installed there would be none of this rubbish. Except for the bullshit OS, and the bullshit application software, and the bullshit games, and the bullshit documentation, and the inferior hardware recognition, and the inferior power mgmt, and the ***constant*** problems with proprietary video drivers, and the inferior support of new hardware, and the near 100% likelihood the victim will soon be forced to learn arcane terminal commands. So yeah, Two STDs, no bullshit when you run Linux.

If it ever was a hot seller, though, you better believe venders would add some... why not? One of the things I like about Macs is while there is the Apple logo, there are no Intel logos and speaker company logos and OS logos and ... well, and no crapware.
