The same way that you will buy a car and - when repairing it - might use third-party parts, the best way to ensure a working desktop is to use a properly-built operating system (like Windows or OS X) and using some open-source software. When it is assisting you, it is fine; when it is the only thing available, it's a disaster waiting to happen. -- Silver Slimer Islam is a disease Proud libertarian, unapologetic nerd, author, gamer, beast-mode teacher and silver-tongued heel Fingerprint: e58428b2633833a3b0c9bb7e40819166642245b7 Gab.ai: @silverslimer

Linux is like a car where you start out with a solid frame (the kernel) and then you zip tie a 1000 other parts to the frame (everything else Linux, DE, applications etc) without regard to what the other 10,000 people working on the car are doing. What you end up with a disjointed mess with no consistency. That's Linux.

It's a constant problem as well. No matter how much the code advances, instability caused by the ass not knowing what the head is doing persists. It gets patched only for another, similar problem to appear because of another component not being programmed to take the first thing into consideration. If a school ran that way, every kid would fail. If a government ran that way... oh wait, that's how the United States runs. At least with OS X and Windows there are standards and a certain structure the developers are essentially forced to work within. Obviously some software tries to do its own thing, but it is easily noticed because it looks and operates worse than the rest and therefore is quickly taken care of. In Linux, since just about everything doesn't look right, it's hard to figure out which software is decent and which isn't. -- Silver Slimer Islam is a disease Proud libertarian, unapologetic nerd, author, gamer, beast-mode teacher and silver-tongued heel Fingerprint: e58428b2633833a3b0c9bb7e40819166642245b7 Gab.ai: @silverslimer
