http://gizmodo.com/alienware-steam-machine-review-pc-gaming-with-console-1741428623 ... "I also want to emphasize again how much I liked the controller. It succeeds on a couple different levels. First, it really helps in making games developed for PC feel like they were actually developed for consoles. Second, it takes cues from existing console controllers, and improves upon them, like swapping out those dual joysticks for dual trackpads, and allowing for unprecedented customization, from button commands to the degree of rumbling haptic action." ... "I'm not crazy about the SteamOS UI--sometimes it feels a little too much like a PC, and not in a good way. There's a lot of clutter and a lot of text. You're not sitting a foot way from your laptop anymore, but the Steam Machine kind of treats you like you are. It's the same reason I don't love using an Internet browser on a PlayStation 3 or 4, for example. I'd almost just open my laptop on the couch next to me." ... "If you love PC gaming, and are specifically a long-time Steam user who loves PC gaming, then you owe it to yourself to give this puppy a go. If you're a gamer who's lukewarm on PC gaming--especially if you don't use Steam--don't do it. Especially given the price. With the cheapest version set at $450, that's a hundred bucks more than a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and a hefty price of admission for a ride you might not enjoy."

It should be noted that the controller is available without the purchase of a Steam machine. I was looking into it but my $30 Logitech controller is working out just fine. -- Slimer

Unless I'm missing something, with the Steam Machine you are locked into their games and/or other Linux games which leaves out a huge number of games. With Steam on a Windows box you get it all and won't spend any more money doing it that way. I didn't see anything that makes me think the Steam Machines are cheaper or better than equivalent Windows machines, and are more restrictive. What am I missing? -- Lloyd

A Steam machine is nothing more than a properly-configured Linux box and indeed offers you nothing more than the crap currently being shoveled down Linux gamers' throats. > With Steam on a Windows box you get it all and won't spend any more money > doing it that way. If anything, not even the cost of the operating system is removed from the machine. You are essentially buying a heavily-compromised Windows box except that we don't even know if it will allow you to easily install Windows once you realize that you are not being offered decent titles on the original machine. -- Slimer

Just about every game nowadays supports joysticks. People prefer the keyboard and mouse in FPS games simply because it gives them a greater level of control. -- Slimer

I missed those great platformers as well as the new ones. -- Lloyd

Whether the PC is going away or not is debatable, but it is certainly in decline when people are using mobile units more and more. -- Sandman

While I think the desktop is going to keep declining it won't be gone any time soon. Laptops are pretty much getting replaced with ultrabooks for those that don't need really killer specs and like nice, small and light laptops. Some great ultrabooks out there. The new Macbook 12", Surface Pro line are just a couple. The SurfacePro to me is the ideal ultrabook. Small, light and powerful enough to do most anything you want to throw at it. And it can be used as a tablet just fine too. Couple it with a Windows phone and you've got a very nice ecosystem surrounding it too. A bit on the pricey side but well worth it. Apple is the only one at the moment that I think needs to see laptops stick around. iOS devices are wonderful, but iOS just isn't a full operating system to do the things that a laptop can do that tablets can't. -- Lloyd

It looks nice, but if Tim Cook is going to kill off the iMac line, they'll need a new Xcode for the iPad Pro to develop for the iPhone and other iOS devices. Or, when MS gets done implementing all of the iOS APIs, then MS new VS2015 or whatever number will be able to generate the programs for any iOS device. Right now they have just the basics and not all of the APIs in place. It will be an interesting change. -- My problem is that I don't have enough middle fingers.
