If internal upgrades are a deciding factor for you your point is a valid
one. No doubt. But for most people they never do such updates.

The old MP did, but I don't recall reading this
about the new one ... its possible, but I suspect
possibly not, as Apple isn't offering to sell any
dual-CPU configurations.

Plus the future isn't really CPU cores anymore, but
workloading GPUs: I believe that the age of having
dual CPUs in order to get more cores is coming to a
close, particularly since Intel now also has a Xeon
with IIRC 12 cores on a single CPU.

There's been some discussion of Intel offering what
would basically be a PCIe expansion card to provide
Thunderbolt onto (some?) legacy motherboards...but
with the advent of Thunderbolt-2, it is sounding to
be a moot point to a degree: the real professional
grade alternatives to TB appear to be things like
Fibre Channel, which aren't cheap either.

Indeed; I've even had some longstanding Applescripts
which are now no longer even compatible with Apple's
own calendar App which was being used as their scheduler.
That kind of stuff is basic and simply should not be broken.

I see that Intel offers a 12 core Xeon, so a dual socket mobo isn't needed.

I think that's pretty much the limits on cpu design. There is only so
far one can take that technology. The next step, I believe, is quantum
cpus if that ever comes to fruition.
OpenCL seems to fit the bill in getting the gpus to do a lot of the work.

Well, Apple will learn in their own way what sells and what really doesn't.
I'm still waiting to see if they'll ever get the bugs out of llvm. I've
seen the Xcode mailing list contain a lot of gripes about the bugs in
llvm lately.

By all means do - point to some price comparisons which show this. To be
clear: some comparison made by a non-COLA or CSMA source where they rate two
or more laptops and show the Mac costing more, less, or about the same as
others.

Not as many Windows games? Interesting claim, considering that OS X can
legally run more emulators (including stuff like Wine) for Windows than Linux can.

In any case, this point is simply trying to score points based on hardware limitations. The real question is if the _same_ hardware can adequately run said "can't run" game with just a change in OS - - probably not.

Oh, this would be a distraction attempt where what Peter wants to avoid is the
simple fact that RAM and Storage have gotten dirt cheap over the past decade,
and there's really not much good reason to not just buy more RAM upfront.

No, but nice straw man attempt anyway. When a reasonable person makes a
reasonable "equals" comparison, the "Apple Tax" is typically only around 10% variance.

And of course, the pendulum swings both ways: none of the review/fanboy websites
have yet been able to match the new Mac Pro, let alone beat it by 10%.

I have not tracked such comparisons in a few years, but in the past Apple
did very well. They were generally deemed less expensive - though to be fair
the comparisons were often done shortly after a new Mac came out when the
bang for the buck compared to the market is the best.

The argument is pointless as the hardware GNU/Linux and OS X runs on can
easily dual-boot Windows. Gone are the days of the Mac being on RISC
processors so if a person absolutely insists on having the best possible
gaming experience, whether he runs OS X or GNU/Linux, he can set up a
partition for Windows as well. However, in comparing Wine and the
emulators in OS X directly, only Wine comes close to giving native
performance within a foreign operating system. The emulators in OS X
will run the Windows games but will provide a fraction of what the
performance should be. Peter is therefore correct.

Internal expansion is limited on most Apple hardware - and for some purposes
this is bad. No doubt.

So show it with your Voldermort software. But you never will because not
even you believe your claims.

> Their hardware is good, but not better than many other good hardware

I have no problem with getting third party support for the printers, AIO
devices, USB headphones, speakers, mice and keyboards, monitors, backup
drives, flash drives, etc. that I use. But keep in mind how little you know
about getting devices to work with OS X:

---------------------------------------------------------------

Peter Köhlmann, after being shown these videos:
    <http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/PrintFirstTime.mp4>
    <http://tmp.gallopinginsanity.com/FirstScan.mov>
Both show an OfficeJet Pro 8600 after being connected to a network and
being used for the first time on a Mac. And it works very, very well.
    -----
Scanning [on OS X] is not supported *at* *all* without jumping
through several hoops. This includes hunting down 3 different
software packages (libusb, sane-backend and sane) *and* installing
them. Out of the box no scanning is supported at all. This is in
stark contrast to linux where scanning is supported right from the
start after setting up the printer

The same is true about *all* OfficeJet Pro printers under OSX.
    -----
LOL! Yes, after being shown how an OfficeJet Pro works without doing
*anything* extra Peter still makes these completely incorrect claims.

My own experience with Mac gaming is that the GPU is always underserved
because Apple provides terrible drivers for it. However, you bring up
excellent points: Apple is indeed pushing for its machines to come with
SSD drives rather than traditional hard disks. While they improve gaming
performance for those who use them (quicker access time essentially
improves the "lag" people feel in FPS games), the lack of actual storage
you get out of them prevents gamers from installing more than a handful
of games at a time.

For the same price, you get the exact same if not better quality from a
PC machine. If people feel that their entry-level PC laptop is shit in
comparison to an entry-level Mac laptop, they're free to stop spending
300$ on that PC laptop and pay 1,000$ instead. As I mentioned earlier,
the software Apple provides is indeed less secure and worse than what a
PC offers. Security is not a priority but neither is performance as can
be seen by the drivers they provide for the GPUs. Also, the interface
looked great in 2000 to people who were accustomed to Windows 98 but in
2014, there truly is nothing special about OS X. It used to appeal to
the people because it was "prettier," however both GNU/Linux and Windows
provide much "prettier" interfaces than Apple does nowadays. Like you
said, if anybody wants to have the OS X interface in GNU/Linux looking
EXACTLY like OS X if not prettier, they're free to install XFCE (for
excellent performance) and a number of different docking utilities.

For some things they seem to work poorly, but for video work they seem to
work very well. Look at the Mac Pro reviews on how well it renders 4K video.
Does so amazingly well, and it is largely because of the GPUs. Developers
have to make use of them, though... and so far many do not.

Fusion drives give you most of the benefits of both.

OS X offers all sorts of system services and tools which no other OS comes
close to. Here is just a partial list:

  - Proxy icons
  - A Media Browser
  - Full screen programs integrating with virtual desktops
  - PDF Services
  - A system wide color selector which allows for add-ons
  - A system wide font manager where you can define sets and more
  - Application services
  - Renaming and moving and duplicating from within programs
  - QuickLook (and its integration with so many programs)
  - Saved status indicators
  - A visual versioning system - which allows easy copying and pasting
    from earlier versions
  - A visual backup system that allows a novice to "dig back" into their
    history
  - Consistent print dialogs
  - Consistent save and open dialogs
  - Consistent common dialog names and placements and hot keys

Not all programs use each of them, but most use any relevant ones. And it
matters. It affects productivity, efficiency, and error-reduction.

Right: Apple makes great technology. It is not perfect nor is it the best
choice for all users and all use cases. So be it. Does not mean it is not
very well designed and built.

Considering the high amount of sales game makers get from iOS, it is
pretty safe to assume that users of OS X would likely buy games if they
were made available. As it is, an OS X user who plays the OCCASIONAL
game will be content with the system but anyone looking to truly use
that machine for gaming will have NO CHOICE but to build a PC. Imagine
how quickly OS X's popularity would skyrocket if Macs were ON PAR with
PCs in the gaming arena.

Hadron, nobody in this group cares what you *think*. I've quickly come
to understand that neither the Windows, Mac or GNU/Linux crowd wants to
have any association with you. In my book, YOU are a fucking wanker and
I think that it is pretty safe to assume that in real life, you probably

It depends. There are two groups here: gamers are not generally the same
group as those who are looking for the most efficient, productive tools they
can get. There is some overlap, of course, but for Apple to focus on the
gamers they would have to change things quite a bit. If they can do it,
great - just do not see it as a main priority for Apple.

Many attacks from you - but no quote of anything he said which is wrong. Now
he and I do not agree on everything but I have general respect for Hadron.
He does not sink to your level.

How many play iOS games isn't any kind of indicator of gaming at all.
Those games are not all that great for any but very casual gamers.

That is what I have seen as well - but I do not pay much attention to the
games and my iOS device is old enough where it cannot handle newer games
(and crashes too often with many newer programs - rather annoying, really).
