What's wrong?
You are running Linux.

1. Boot Windows 10 install media.

1 Buy a Mac.

I enjoy my experience with Linux much more than with Windows.
And the few minutes I spent with a Mac left me quite underwhelmed.

Windows experience is ruined by Windows Update. All I can say it is
bloated piece of crap that trashes computer constantly.
Mac is better in this regard for light processing, that is chit
chatting sending mails and surfing. I heard that it is not so good in
regard of heavier tasks.
Linux is best of all three because it is lightest , you can choose
whatever setup and you have all control what is going on with the
system. Only thing that surprised me was upload spikes to google sites
and I easily found out that evolution data server was responsible. So I
just removed damn thing and problem no more. Anyway I don't use
evolution and empathy which relies on that. Eh I lost date annotation
and holidays in Gnome calendar but anyway I don't need that.

Linux is indeed light and fast but it also seems to come with
inexplicable problems. Twice already in the weekend I had to suffer
through the computer being unable to shut down. I would tell you what
the cause was but after a reboot, it shut down properly so there was
no message of any kind at the end indicating what the issue was. That
and "Files" in Gnome 3 just decided to not be able to load itself.
It's just sad to say the least.

The only time I have had a shutdown issue was with WiFi and NFS under
systemd. What would happen is that the wifi would shut down before the
NFS share was unmounted and cause the system to wait for NFS.

For all I know, it was something like that which happened for me too.
I just don't have the patience to run around and fix all of Linux's
bugs though... or to find compromises.

No. You screwed up your linux setup

Nobody would expect you to fix anything. You know not more than Snit Michael
Glasser about "technology". That is, nothing

Of course! It's always the user's fault when Linux fails. I wonder how
using the default settings screws a system up though.

I think that one could go into systemd... not sure if that is possible
because I've never looked there... to reverse the order of which
services to shutdown first. A long time ago, in order to get the
desired default fonts on the system, I reversed the position of the
system fonts that way and got what I wanted. I believe it is the way
the system handles things... first come first served.

Maybe I'm picky but I don't see why a regular user should have to
start his Linux-using experience by fixing so many damned issues.

Understandable. That's why a lot of people either prefer windows or mac.
Most of the files are just text files, so editing them can be easily done.
However, a knowledge of how the system works, needs to be read about.
Consider that the service being provided gets its marching orders from a config
file. The problem here, is the config files' name match up to the name of the
service? I don't know. After a while getting used to the system makes things
become more apparent over time. It's just a steep learning curve in the
beginning.

Said user doesn't have to choose Linux at all.

On the one hand I want the security that comes with a Linux
distribution including the encrypted home direction available by
default and the proper root access management, on the other I want to
make sure that my hardware and software actually work right. If gaming
weren't an issue, I'd live with Ubuntu and find a way around the
problems but that part always weighs heavily in my choice.

Could just be your hardware. Aside from the NFS issue I mentioned, I
have zero problem shutting down. In fact it was working too well for a
lot of us for a while there. And it turned out that systemd was just
shutting down without stopping services for a while. We all thought it
was 'too fast...' and as it turned out it was....

At the end of the day the hardware you have is what you have. And if
Linux isn't working for you, then it isn't. You can either try something
else on your existing hardware, try different hardware or find another
operating system. It's not for everyone.

My systems boot in about 12 seconds, shut down in about 4.

"If gaming weren't an issue.." Funny it's an issue for Slimeball, & yet
Steam now have almost 2,000 Linux games for download. If it was such an
issue, you think Steam would choose to port their games to Linux?
(In case the Slimeball troll didnt' realize it, *that* is a rhetorical
question.)

I have steam installed on Mint 18 right now. And I had Steam installed
on Ubuntu when it was in beta. I've considered a SteamBox several times
but just don't play enough games to justify it in my mind. The reason I
do consider it at all is because if you take games out of the equation
hen the machine can be much simpler. Without games, I'm totally happy
with basic intel graphics.

I have no issues with steam. None with music. I wrote my sync script and
use that. I got no real issue with Linux that I can think of. And I have
tried quite a few distros.

I've no issues with Linux either. I run openSUSE & Debian on my
machines.
ATM I'm experimenting with openSUSE Leap42.1 running KDE 4, because I do
*not* like KDE Frameworks5 (a lot of others don't either).

If your primary interest in computing is downloading music for your
whatever, or playing games, you belong in the cattle pen Mr Gates built.

Windows is specifically designed for people who don't understand
computing and don't want to be bothered.

I used KDE on Slackware 14.x. I prefer Gnome, but I'm totally fine with
KDE or Gnome. When given the choice I gravitate to gnome.

I briefly tried Leap when it released. Rhel will likely always be my go
to distro when I want something I know well and trust will work for me.
Either Ubuntu or Mint for that consumer-ish feel. I've got a pretty good
set of software I rely on and don't honestly have a desire that is not
being met well.

I used to be a little upset about no Audible, but then someone suggested
I try Downpour which is like audible but the book are standard mp3. They
have an Android, iPhone app. And for the Linux Desktop I can just
continue to use Rhytmbox. The next thing which is no longer an issue was
sometimes playing a DRM video via the browser. As my choice for browser
is Firefox and they have resolved that now.

Linux is where I feel at home. I'm quite comfortable with it. Everything
else feels like I am missing something.

2,000 Linux games, most of which aren't worth playing. There's a
_handful_ of AAA titles like Borderlands 2, Borderlands: The
Pre-Sequel, Shadow of Mordor and Civilization 5 but you won't find any
games made by EA (there go great racing games), Ubisoft (there goes
Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell) or Activision. I don't need _any_
game, I want the best.

As for "Steam [choosing] to port their games to Linux," you're
referring to Valve and they haven't made many games at all in years
but yes, what they DID make they ported to Linux; they're one of the
few companies doing so.

Steam was not an issue in Ubuntu right now. My concern was that it
might become an issue if I used a different distribution. Since Linux
Mint is based on Ubuntu, I can't imagine it having trouble.

I have Steam on Mint 18 with no issues. You'll be fine.
